Hooded Man in Abu Ghraib Photo Speaks Out

Tonight at 9 p.m. on PBS you can watch the first in-depth American television interview with Haj Ali, a former prisoner who says he was the man under the black hood in the infamous photo from Abu Ghraib.

"Abu Ghraib is a breeding ground for insurgents," says Ali, who describes his experience in detail. "99% of the people brought in are innocent, but with all the insults and torture, it makes them ready to do just about anything."

....Before the Iraq war Haj Ali was the mayor of the Al Madifai district, near Baghdad. After the U.S. took control of the area he was removed from his position. As an official, he was required to join the ruling Baath Party. Haj Ali then worked as an administrator for a mosque, until he was picked up off the street one day in October 2003. Today Haj Ali works for a prisoner's association. He says he has no part in the insurgency.

go in an innocent shopkeeper, come out an insurgent ready to blow up your fellow citizens. Is anyone naive enough to believe it?

I think it's more like come out a person ready and willing to blow up Americans. That's the real Bush foreign policy. Endless war. Very profitable. Invest your children.

Let's not forget the greatest crime: These people had been simply arrested were never charged and convicted. You can't justify mistreating a suspect who's alleged to be an "unlawful combatant" because that's what the trial is for- to determine whether they engaged in terrorist acts (which would THEN and only THEN have made them unlawful combatants). By that regard, you could pick up murder suspects and shoot them behind the jailhouse because "murder is a capital offense." Uh, how about a trial first? So, you wanna play Plush Limbaugh with "unlawful combatants?" Blaghdaddy has no problem except for one question- How do you know which one is a terrorist and which one happened to make his neighbour mad last night? Torture him to find out? America, be very, very proud.

Based on the pattern by which the "special interest" detainees were rounded up here in the US after 9/11, I don't think it take naivete to believe that the majority of prisoners in Abu Ghraib did not deserve to be there. I think the ICRC would agree with me.

I would like to see the civilian contractors charged and put on trial, mainly in the interest of finding out where the orders originated from. Will that ever happen?

Maybe we can have PPJ reason with this guy? Come on Jim, what would you say to this man? You support this war, you see much sense in it. Tell him about it.

Big detour there... Whether the war was just or not (which it was) has no bearing on what happened at Abu Graib. No war just justify what we saw in those pictures...these weren't convicted pedaphiles, they were Iraqis picked up off the street after Madame DeFarge fingered them. Every man-jack in those pictures should have been arrested and put on trial and the civilians charged as well. Remember when Iraq mistreated American POW's during the first Gulf War? Remember your anger and sick outrage? Where is it now, America?

So where are the right-thinkers among us on this? Graner and England - redstaters or bluestaters?
