Stem Cell Research Bill Advancing in Congress

Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette is co-sponsor of H.R. 810 the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, that would expand federal government oversight of stem cell research. She issued this press release today (received by e-mail.)

"I appreciate the hard work by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and the Republican Main Street Partnership to help pass the Castle-DeGette stem cell bill. This just reinforces the fact that embryonic stem cell research is backed by a wide and deep coalition of pro-choice and pro-life Republicans and Democrats," said Rep. DeGette. "In my eight years in Congress, the only other legislation that received such broad and bipartisan support was the Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform plan. Today, similar support appears to be building in Congress for stem cells."

Here's what the bill would do:

The bill would require NIH to fund research utilizing human embryonic stem cells regardless of the date such cells were derived. NIH would be required to publish implementing guidelines within 60 days of enactment. H.R. 810 had 150 cosponsors upon introduction, and was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Strange. New setup works fine on the IBM connection, but still fails on the Mac and then refuses to even allow further attempts.

Good news. Less chance that 10-20 years from now we'll be a second or third rate nation when it comes to biotechnology, and a nice reminder to the wingnuts that most of the nation is in the middle.

I believe republipigs are too stupid to understand something as complex as
stem cells and should have no say on the subject. But, you know what will happen, as Europe makes great strides in stem cells therapy, rich republicans will fly over there to get therapies, that America would have developed, if not for these people blocking it.
Did you miss something? Orrin Hatch co-sponsored bill. It passed a Republican controlled Congress

And your evidence for that is what?

I’ll worry about congressional regulation when it specifies what private individuals can legally do with their own stem cells. There are folks who have good faith reasons for not wanting their tax dollars spent on this kind of research. This belongs in the private sector.

“Just like creatism belongs in the church and not in the public schools.” Actually this is the same argument I would use to illustrate why schooling also belongs in the private sector.

From each according to their opportunity cost, to each according to their ability to pay. Maybe next we could privatize the Fire Department too, since more expensive houses are more worth saving. Definitely what I'd call Christian values...
