Just look at the wonderful job of spreading freedom and democracy in Uzbehkistan -- our "ally" in the war on logic, er, terror. We're playing our same old games, supporting tyrants when it suits our purposes, completely ignoring the future results of that support. Can anyone imagine a genuinely creative and imaginative person as president of the U.S.? Sadly, I can't. We need a new Howard Beale. Someone who's "Mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore", but who's also not beholden to the monied interests. In other words, someone who can, with the power of their intellect and imagination alone, capture the the nation's attention like never before. But it takes brass balls/tits, and the ability to suffer the slings and arrows and launch them right back with truth on your side.

Big news internationally for sure. People will want to check out the great news that the piece of garbage who was circulating a tape of himself raping an eight-year old girl on video at a Disney World resort has been found... Unfortuately, he's already in jail for child porn since '03... Blaghdaddy for one was hoping everyone would get a crack at this guy before the cops did... Great news, anyway...

The left and right (or pro-death penalty and anti-death penalty; or pro-life and pro-choice) certainly engage in a number of arguments over birth control; abortion; death penalty; active euthanasia etc. It seems that in a lot of cases we end up talking in circles because we have no underlying philosophical agreement on "Why is it immoral to kill?"; much less when. This is a essay by Don Marquis in the Journal of Philosophy which posits that underlying question; has a philosophical answer; and aims that answer at abortion (he's anti- in case you are religiously opposed to viewing anti-abortion arguments). But the answer applied more broadly may be a basis of (to borrow a physics concept) unified theory on "Sanctity of Life" kind of issues. I have found it so; and have harmonized (and changed) some of my positions based on this philosophical essay. Obviously, the question of "Why is it immoral to kill?" underlies MANY justice issues - so it is not out of place at TalkLeft. At the very minimum, he trashes both the biology arguments of anti-abortionists; and the personhood (sentinence) arguments of the pro-choice camp - so he will at least help your arguments either way be more consistent. I have been in one thread on this and have discovered that many wanted to comment without bothering to read and think about the essay first - so I will not do that again. I just offer it for your education and examination.
