Photos of Guantanamo Then and Now

Here is an interesting assemblage of photographs of Guantantano. They were taken by reporters. See how artfully arranged some of them are, particularly those of the possessions of detainees, including religious items like Korans, which also are pictured hanging inside surgical masks. There's also photos of a board with leg irons, of cuffs protruding from the floor and stark interrogation rooms.

Considering this is a prison, conditions don't look too bad, but keep in mind these are government-approved photos.

What is in Room 101? Obviously AP Photographer Richard Ross has read his Orwel and the US gov has not. Government approveed? The irony is painful.

Ask Maya Angelou why "The Caged Bird Sings..." Or you can just ask the pigeons... As for THIS picture, is anyone sure this isn't from an Al Quaida propaganda manual? They couldn't find a better photo...

Blagdaddy, Welcome Back! The Caged Bird Sings is my all time favorite Maya Angelou poem...years ago, I heard a young woman on the TL kid's high scchool debate team perform it in the state championships, and I was riveted. I associate it more with the massive incarceration of African Africans in this country than I do the detainees, but thanks for reminding me and everyone else of it.

No probs, TL, and thanks for the welcome... Now, accused terrorists are certainly not African-American freedom fighters, but it also bears remembering that NONE of these accused men has even seen a trial, and many have been released as innocent without so much as an "Oops, sorry 'bout that gov'nah." Of all the incarcerated Arabs in American Gulags around the world, can anyone say that there is NO innocent man being brutalized? For anyone who says "No," Blaghdaddy has his blog for today waiting for you...

Blagh - Many of these men have seen a tribunal, which is more than Nick Berg received, and some have been released, and some have not. Seems fair to me. Che - We don't know. We do know he wasn't waiting to be taken into a courtyard and killed by a shot at the base of his skull.

PPJ, re: "Many of these men have seen a tribunal..." You must be referring to the tribunals to determine their status that you claim they are not entitled to, right? However, I wasn't aware that "many" of the men at Guantanamo received tribunals. How about answering a few simple questions. When did these tribunals take place? How many of the men at Guantanamo received tribunals?

Don't waste your breathe, Horse... Ask PPJ what he thinks of Jewish terrorists, since he thinks that only Arabs commit terrorism. And for PPJ's referencing pleasure, he can peruse the following articles about Jewish terrorism and let us know what should be done to them... Same as Guantanamo? Why not? Aren't they the same as Al Quaida? If not, why?

Blaghdaddy, While on the subject, don't forget Luis Posada Carriles an "accused" terrorist (just like all those others in Gitmo, except, gasp, he's not moslem), who is now in the hands of the Bush admin. This man is accused of an airline bombing in Venezula in 1976, and bombing hotels in Cuba in 1998, killing innocent civilians both times. Why is he not in Gitmo like the others? I mean, if it's the only way to deal with those captured in the "War on terra", as claimed by Bush Inc. Looks like terrorists aren't all that bad when the GOP needs those Cuban exile votes to help hold on to Florida. Again, a lovely double standard. Indeed, Horse, save your breath. You'll find a more constructive and intellectually honest debate with a brick wall.

Blagh didn't, Adept-One...he blogged on it back on May 6th, with the same question- When is a terrorist not a terrorist? Answer: When George says he isn't...

John H - No, the tribunals we graciously extended to them to make sure we were correct. Other countries and other times they would have seen a short rope and a long drop, with no time for questions. Blagh - Another Leftie commenting to, let's not debate, just rant for each other. That's sad. How's the echo chamber these days? BTW - No sympathy for Berg?

PPJ- What? Advocating the expulsion of an international terrorist is ranting? Why are you even here? You're on another planet, PPJ... As for tribunals, let's give a few countries a shot at Bush and let's see how short that drop gets...Blagh's got the hood...

I dunno about the rest of you, but I am reminded of the pictures and films I was shown when the army was trying to get their claws into me. The presentation and the reality are always different.

Why again is this particular individual in a cage? What exactly did he do to us?
