Atrios to Mulitply, Other Blogs to Follow

Atrios, just back from a month of travel, is adding two new bloggers to Eschaton.

Go away for a month and suddenly everyone's turning their blogs into mini empires. Don't want to be left behind. So, next month Gil Gerard and Erin Grey will join the brain trust here.

Avedon Carol, Attaturk and Echidne did a great job guest-blogging for Atrios this month. Don't forget to read them at their own blogs. And welcome, Gil and Erin. [Update: Pete at Drug War Rant has identified them.]

Quite a few blogs are going this route. For me, the sign that it works is when I find myself reading the post without checking first to see who wrote it - the principal blogger or the guest. Another example of a blog who has successfully made the transition: Skippy, which now includes regular postings by Cookie Jill and R.J. Eskow, both of whom contribute added variety, wit and substance to the unique and funny blog. Who knew that Skippy International would become a reality?

Jeanne D'Arc of Body and Soul is now blogging over at This Modern World, where Tom Tomorrow has added several contributing voices.

I predict we will be seeing more of this in the blogosphere, particularly during the summer months as bloggers begin taking vacations. It may be the direction we all take in the future. It allows excellent but less widely read bloggers the opportunity to gain readers for their own blogs as it relieves pressure on more established bloggers who want to continue with frequent updates throughout the day but have to confront the reality of demands of their day-jobs and other real-life activities.

I've been lucky to have TChris as a frequent contributor to TalkLeft the past year and a half. Will we add extra voices? I'm open to it and may just start scouting the blogosphere for kindred voices I think would be a good fit for TalkLeft.

Many bloggers choose their new contributors from their frequent commenters. Daily Kos is an example. That seems to be a tried and tested measure, so I'll be looking there as well.

While I don't plan any additions immediately, if you think you'd be a good fit and would like to give it a shot, send me an e-mail so I can get familiar with your writing style, your "voice" and your opinions. One thing I won't do is add contributors with opinions that diverge from this blog's primary goal of supporting constitutional rights, particularly those of persons accused of crime.

Civil liberties, the war on drugs, governmental excess and abuse of power, politics, elections and legislation are also important to TalkLeft, so there's a lot room in choice of topics. TalkLeft is a committed Democrat, and will be working actively to help them take back Congress in 2006, so no Republicans will be considered.

Let TChris and me know your thoughts on this - we do read the comments.

With Atrios adding Gil Gerard and Erin Gray, maybe I can cash in and grab TWIKI and Dr. Theopolis. Maybe Pamela Hensley would be available for some guest spots on TL.
