Michael Jackson: Closing Arguments Thursday

Trial Update
June 1, 2005

The Michael Jackson jury received the court's instructions today. Closing arguments are tomorrow. The trial ended with the prosecution replaying a video of the accuser detailing his allegations against Jackson. Then the defense rested without calling more witnesses, including the accuser, as originally intended. A mistake? Possibly. On the other hand, why call the accuser or his mother again for rebuttal and give them another shot with the jury.

The jury will be allowed to consider a lesser misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to a minor. When you are going for a not guilty verdict, lesser offenses can be bad because the jury might compromise on the lesser when without it they might acquit.

The defense did a good job in this trial of impeaching every witness. Will it be enough, given all the evidence of years old allegations by former accusers? I hope so. This case was a political prosecution from start to finish, in my opinion.

Prosecutor Tom Sneddon, man on a mission, won't be doing the prosecution's closing - Tom Mesereau will close for the defense.

Jackson's spokesman said today:

Mr. Jackson relied on his faith in God and the American justice system to get through the trial. She said he spoke with the Rev. Jesse Jackson nearly every day.

She said that she did not know the singer's views on the possibility that he might be going to prison.

"He's a grown man; he knows what life is about," she said. "Nobody needs to talk to him about what it would be like in prison."

Good luck, Michael Jackson. TalkLeft is rooting for you.
