Tagged With The Book Meme

Is there anyone who hasn't been tagged yet? Melanie of Just a Bump in the Beltway got me. I put it off for a week, but now that I see everyone from Avedon Carol to Patrick Nielsen Hayden to Digby (I can't find the permalink, I just remember reading it) and Suburban Guerilla have responded, here's mine:

Number of Books I Own: Under 100, when I moved last December I donated hundreds --all I ever owned in the past 30 years -to the Denver University Women's Library Association which holds a book sale every year to raise funds. They even came and picked them up. My record album collection of 30 years ended up with one of the movers who ooh'ed and aah'ed so much over many of them that I figured he'd give them a good home. I can't say enough for downsizing.

Last Book I Bought: Bob Dylan's Chronicles (actually, it was on my Amazon wish list and my sister bought it for me.)

Last Book I Read (that I really loved and could not put down): Cane River, by Lalita Tademy, a family saga about four generations of strong-willed black women, following them from birth to death and from slavery to freedom.

Books That Meant a Lot To Me (At the Time): Everything by Joan Didion, but in particular, Play It As It Lays, which I probably read over a dozen times. I'm one of the few people with a copy of the movie, which I just lent this weekend to movie-obsessed (in a good way) Jeff Goldstein of the right-wing blog Protein Wisdom; A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Pippi Longstocking books (as a kid, I loved Pippi because she didn't have adults to tell her what to do); A Stone for Danny Fisher (Harold Robbins); Snowblind by Robbert Sabbag (still the best cocaine-smuggling book ever); Good Night Moon (because in reading it thousands of time to the TL kid, it was comforting every time.)

Now, I'm supposed to tag five people, but I really hate to do this to anyone else. On the other hand, I don't want to be a spoil sport and as a blogger, it's good to have team spirit, so here goes: Skippy, John at Crooks and Liars, Blaghdaddy of the Blaghdad Cafe , James Capozzola of Rittenhouse Review , Natasha of Pacific Views and Howard Bashman of How Appealing.

I had never read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn until I heard a CBC reading of the chapter in which the kids get the Christmas tree one year when I was about 45. I immediately ordered it from Amazon. It's a wonderful book.

I think everyone in America should read "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. I also highly recommend "the name of the Rose" and "Focault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco. I also recommend anything by D.H. Lawrence, Herman Hesse and George Eliot. An all time favorite is Nora Zeale Thurston's "Their eyes were watching God". Another is Hugo's "Les Miserables". Also, if you haven't read any Dickens, you're missing out. Try A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield or Hard Times. Jack London's books are also fabulous.

I highly recommend Absolutely American, about several West Point cadets. It's short enough to check out based only the recommendation of somebody whose opinion you don't respect (cough). More generally, listening to audio books in my car has been a quality-of-life improvement. Turns the twice-daily 30-minute commute into a pleasure.

That was fun, TL... Next month's theme...what's your favorite type of "Cracker?"...and is hating Crackers a "Hate-Crime?" Let's see you all 'tag' that...

I have to confess I really can’t read fiction, something that drives my wife nuts. I just become bored easily. I like current events stuff, technical science stuff, philosophy (which is easy to pick up and put down at whim). I have the same problem with movies; I get bored and can’t sit through them (another thing that my wife hates). Come on, I can’t be the only one who doesn’t read fiction, right?

You will love Chronicles, I suspect. It's a beautiful, beautiful book, and guaranteed to become as much of a classic as Catcher in the Rye.
