Former Stripper Wins Judicial Election

A former stripper in Nevada has won an election for a municipal court judgeship. Good for her.

Ex-stripper Diana Hampton will soon have something new to wear — judicial robes. Hampton was elected to the Municipal Court in Henderson on Tuesday, defeating Michael Miller in a run-off by 176 votes.

Hampton, 39, had acknowledged during the campaign that she worked at a Las Vegas striptease club to help pay her way through college 14 years ago. She called it "a fact of life" and said she hoped the interest it drew to her candidacy would eventually die down.

Update: And a former dominatrix is pondering a 2006 run for Governor of Nevada.

    desert - Not bad, not bad at all. Are you refering to the ex-stripper or the dominatrix? I'm kinda curious as to your personal tastes. But do feel free to tell me it's none of my business. ;-)

    I suppose its great that she was able to progress through the levels of discrimination in our society; however, I'm not enamored with the idea of celebrating women who use their bodies/sexuality for profit. Celebrating that is kind of like saying, respect me for something other than my sexuality, but pay me just for that too. The depressing thing about it is that she probably couldn't have afforded law school otherwise. What a screwed up society. Access to money shouldn't be a corequisite to education.

    I love Las Vegas. We should make it the US Capital just to piss off fundamentalists world wide. If we are going to be called the "great satan", we may as well try to do the title justice. Seriously, good for her...I guess she really was stripping to pay her way through school:) Tampa...Is there really a difference between a stripper using their body for profit and a laborer using their body for profit? If she had no problem stripping, no one else should. I feel she deserves praise for moving from the stage to the bench, same as if a ditchdigger moved from the jobsite to the bench.

    Tampa, She could have gotten student loans, like the rest of us. Anyone who wants to go to school can do it. Dog, I deal with many, many, strippers. Many, if not most, have very destructive attitudes towards men. They tend not to be very healthy, emotionally.

    I'm sure you're right Rog. The point I was trying to make is lots of people use their body to make a living, that's all. A stripper is no more objectified than a laborer.

    K- On a certain level, I agree with you. I am wary though, that you are denigrating laborers. Stripping is basically promising sex for money, and then not providing the sex. It is an illusion. Labor is very honest.

    The last thing I would want to do is diss laborers, I've been one myself. It was just an example, data entry clerk or fireman or soldier works just as well. It is honest work, but I think stripping is as well. No one should expect to get laid in the strip club. The customer is paying for the illusuion you mentioned, for the fantasy, maybe a little titillating contact, nothing more. The customer should be well aware of this, and if he/she isn't, it's on them. Nothing dishonest about it, IMO.

    Hmmm, Seems she was qualified for the job. Why do some feel it is important to bring up her past in the manner that TL does? Perhaps it's politics, she was endorsed by the police. I find it amusing that a conservative would have to point that out, but the title of this thread makes it seem that the post was meant to be prejudicial. If I'm wrong I apologize.

    I'm sure she will fit in fine. After all, look who's coming to W's White House dinner. At this time, her relation to any sharecroppers is unknown.

    Adept - As a sharecropper's son I can tell you she is not a relation, but I would love to get to know her better! I wonder if she is of the "touchy feely" school? All politics is personal, isn't it?

    Yep, all politics do have a personal component. As for "the touchy-feely" school, I don't know. I wouldn't touch her without a level 4 biohazard suit. Way too much on traffic on that road for me.
