What do our friends on the left think of the plan to combine Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. into an EU-style superstate? Some snippets from Senate testimony: This trilateral approach should be institutionalized in a new North American Advisory Council... Its principal purpose should be to prepare a North American agenda for leaders to consider at biannual summits and to monitor the implementation of the resulting agreements. It should be an advisor to the three leaders but also a public voice and symbol of North America... Centers for North American Studies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico would help people in all three countries to understand the problems and the potential of an integrated North America--and to think of themselves as North Americans... Until a new consciousness of North America's promise takes root, many of these proposals will remain impractical... Do you: 1. Support? 2. Support if changed to include social benefits? 3. Oppose?

Sounds like a make-work project for somebody's brother-in-law. By "EU-style" do you mean power-grabbing and doomed to failure? IIRC, the E.U. started out an purely an economic arrangement so Europeans could trade as a block. The U.S. is strong enough that it doesn't need anything like that. So is Canada, if to a lesser extent. Mexico doesn't bring much to the table economically. Travel and trade between the countries is already pretty open. It could stand to be more so, but that doesn't require anything E.U.-like. So basically, the U.S. has nothing to gain from a Union. Canada doesn't have much to gain. Mexico has plenty to gain, but nobody else has a reason to compromise independence to help Mexico.

I can't vouch for anybody, but there's a project underway to get volunteers to adopt Chinese bloggers to work around censorship.
One might ask why anyone might choose to adopt a blog and host it for free. The answer: the Adopt a Blog project is centered on the issue of the individual's freedom of speech. Anyone who participates is making a strong statement in favor of free speech, as well as helping to further shape the internet as a tool for the free exchange of ideas internationally. The internet can be a very powerful force.

I'd oppose it for the same reason the French and Dutch did the EU constitution. Because it is a bad idea.

The NAU is a bad idea. Did anybody read about the Canadian SC ruling on healthcare. Their system is a joke and a great example of what a bizzaro world of Hillary Care would bring us

Well, it looks like Jesus' General has had a dandy of an idea. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting of the College Chickenhawks....Plenty of White Feathers to go around.

Let me put it this way. Are you out of your mind????? Could you explain what you mean? 1. "Of course I oppose this plan." 2. "This is Nancy Luft talk!" In case you mean the second, that link above is to testimony in the U.S. Senate from a CFR-linked American University professor who used to work for the Carter Center. The Cato Institute recently published a similar plan. And, last month Our Leader, Vicente Fox, and the guy from Canada met at Baylor in Waco to discuss the "Security and Prosperity Partnership for North America." Apparently Nancy Luft was at least partially right, as a little research will show.

Folks - Today's NewsHour back-and-forth regarding PBS' alleged bias with George Neumayr, executive editor of the American Spectator Magazine really did it for me. I have to say it now. These guys are CryBabies, Whiners, Spoiled Brats. They got most everything they wanted and still are not satisfied. They want to dominate the whole world and are not satisfied as long as any other point of view remains. Call me when some grown-ups arrive on the scene. Otherwise, I'm tuning them off. Hestia

Mr. Ditto, why are comments now posted in the same window instead of a separate window?

Actually, Sailor, I made that change. The size of the popup style wasn't uniform in all browsers and I just like having a whole page for the comments. Also, many browsers now block popups and lots of readers check that option.

Thanks for the info TL. I appreciate the difficulties with designing for cross browser/platform inconsistencies.

Talk Left: I agree that the pop-up comments may be blocked by browsers, etc; however, it was a blessing on my PDA. The left hand collumn requires a lot of repeated scrolling. Although I very rarely bothered to comment from the PDA, choosing instead to read it more for the news links as I go about my day, the new registration scheme has made it far too time consuming to consider it. I've not seen any other requests for it - but the number of handheld users/would-be bloggers are likely to increase with the introduction of high speed wireless and more access points to wi-fi networks. A handheld browser configuration would be appreciated - if it is a possibility with your site code.

Tampa, I used to have one here but the guy who made it stopped updating his site after the elections. I don't know how to make the code for it.
