Trial Starts for RNC Protester in New York

Trial began in New York Tuesday for protester June Brashares, accused of kicking a security guard while being ejected from Bush's speech at the Republican National Convention last September in New York.

June Brashares, 40, of San Francisco, is on trial in Manhattan's Criminal Court charged with misdemeanor assault, attempted assault, disorderly conduct and harassment in connection with the incident on Sept. 2, 2004.

Meanwhile, charges still have not been brought against the Republican kicker -- a young Republican supporter caught on video kicking a female protester inside Madison Square Garden as she was lying on the ground being held by three secret service agents. The protesters were arrested. The young Republican was not...

Shorter Ed: Kicking a trespasser. Real good. "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." Sounds like some little righty tighty needs some "re education".

Is the name of the woman whom the brave young Republican kicked while she was on the ground being held down by three Secret Service agents been made public? If yes, has she filed a criminal complaint? If yes, what has happened as far as the complaint is concerned. If no, then why not? To the poster Ed who wrote: “kicking a trespasser-too bad,” how would you like it if the same thing happened to your wife, sister, mother, daughter?

The woman was doing nothing wrong. She was standing on a chair screaming, like half the convention hall at the time. The only difference was her cries were anti-Bush, the rest pro-Bush. As we can see, free speech that is anti-Bush is punishable by arrest. Whatever she did after being grabbed can be justified as self defense. I commend her for standing up on principal. The prosecution offered a no-jail plea deal, and she turned it down.

et al - I said it before, and I say it again. I never saw the "kick" by the Repub, although I examined the video almost frame by frame. I did see a lot of pushing and shoving, but no kick. I offer a $10 contribution to TL as a reward for someone showing me the "kick." BTW - The reporter didn't back her story up, and neither did the cameraman, both of whom should have been in perfect position to do so.

that kid was a punk. it will come around to bite him in the behind someday. whats more upsetting is the number of people arrested who were obviously not doing anything at all illegal. Video evidence helped clear 400 of the 1,806 arrests during last year's Republican convention. Philadelphia Inquirer

I don't think they were security guards, one was a floor whip, basically cheerleader; the other was a repub PR guy. If they weren't trained and employed by a security company and hired for that purpose then they had no right to assault her. "Flanagan described the injurious kick as one that went backward, mule-like, after he pulled Brashares from her chair." Everyone there was screaming and holding signs; she was targeted because of the content of her speech. Sounds like she was defending herself against thugs who were trying to repress free speech. She wasn't tresspassing, she was credentialed. "Asked by Gottlieb about a torn ligament in one of Brashares' fingers, Peschong said he never touched her fingers. But a videotape of the men carrying her out shows Peschong's hand on her fingers. It also shows him putting a hand over her mouth. " Well he just purjured himself; let's see him go to jail for that.
