Tony Blair's Son to Intern for Rep. David Dreier

One would think that Tony Blair's son could have his choice of Congresspersons for whom to intern. Why would he choose conservative Republican David Dreier?

THE Prime Minister's son, Euan Blair, has beaten around 100,000 hopefuls to secure an internship with a Republican congressman who is accused by gay rights campaigners of leading a double life. Euan is to work for David Dreier on Capitol Hill in Washington.

The coveted intern posts often go to the most academically gifted, but connections are equally important.

What a curious choice for the son of a Labour Prime Minister:

Mr Dreier, who will be the 21-year-old's mentor during his internship, has been accused of hypocrisy for opposing legislation to stop discrimination against gay couples when questions have been asked about his personal life.

He is believed to live with his male chief of staff and has refused to comment on his sexuality.

However, campaigners have accused him of double standards, pointing to his voting record in which he has opposed legislation to ban discrimination against gay people in employment and supported a ban on gay and lesbian couples adopting in the district of Columbia, as well as rejecting hate-crimes legislation intended to protect gays.

I love the way you pass innuendos about a part of Dreier's life that he would clearly like to keep private. You call his voting record (with respect to what you assume about his private life) hypocrisy - it's very much hypocritical for TL to wax on about privacy concerns and do this. I expect you'll stop worrying about invasions of privacy - of any sort - now? Second, there's a simple reason Blair is having is son work with a Republican - in Washington, the Democrats control none of the levers of power (unless you count mindless gainsaying as a lever). What would he learn there?

JR - what would he learn there? How about integrity?

James, cry me a bigger river; that one's still too small... ;.)

Asserting that either party has higher ethical standards than the other is just stupid - or naive. There are good pols in both; there are hacks in both. Republicans have hacks and morons, as do Democrats. When do you plan to read Sharpton, race baiter and anti-semite out, for instance?

"I love the way you pass innuendos about a part of Dreier's life that he would clearly like to keep private." I wouldn't call living with another man "private". He ain't exactly closeted.

It reminds me of some show I saw where they had this blind guy as a white supremecist and he made all these racial remarks, only he was black and no one had ever told him. When he found out, he divorced his wife for sleeping with a black guy. This attitude that this guy shouldn't be outed is silly. As a gay man who is out, I think his rich powerful fat arse should be outed so maybe he can have a small taste of what it is to try and live a normal life not in the closet and by the rules he pushes to impose. Let him live with the open discrimination that I and my partner of 8 years have had to live with, the discrimination he and his ilk have fostered and tried to protect. In fact, I'd like to see the sodomy laws back on the books for just one day. One day, so the police can storm his home and arrest him and his partner. Cry me a river indeed.
