Army Recruits Abused at Basic Training

As if the U.S. military didn't have enough scandals going between Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and the ghost detainees, now we learn it is abusing its own recruits:

The recruits of Echo Company stumbled off the bus for basic training at Fort Knox to the screams of red-faced drill instructors. That much was expected. But it got worse from there.

Echo Company's top drill instructor seized a recruit by the back of the neck and threw him to the ground. Other soldiers were poked, grabbed or cursed. Once inside the barracks, Pvt. Jason Steenberger says, he was struck in the chest by the top D.I. and kicked "like a football." Andrew Soper, who has since left the Army, says he was slapped and punched in the chest by another drill instructor. Pvt. Adam Roster says he was hit in the back and slammed into a wall locker.

Eventually, four Army drill instructors and the company commander would be brought up on charges. Four have been convicted so far.

In BCT? Hell we never had that happen, now that is sad, but what do you think is going to happen when the collapse comes and you are out in the open? take down the army and take down the nation that is what fools want to do, ask one question do you want people like me running around with guns?

Good heavens, Basic was never like that for us. We never... ok, there was one idiot, but most of our Drills never got redfaced or yelled. They were scarier when quiet, actually. They certainly never hit or tossed us. They had other ways. It was a very assemblyline-like experience.

Our drills would yell at us and call us names, but they never touched us. Some had stories of "the old days", but this has been unacceptable for decades

When I was in the Navy, (bootcamp included), the CsiC were NEVER allowed to touch us, denigrate our religion or race. One who did assault a recruit (a chief) was dismissed from the service, with prejudice. 'Blanket parties' by your mates were ignored, maybe even encouraged, but from higher ups it just didn't happen w/o serious consequences.

Yeah....I don't remember our drill instructors screaming, getting red-faced, calling us names, and NONE of them EVER touched us. Went to basic at Ft. McClellan, AL - in the summer. There was one occasion where we were marching in dang near 100-degree weather and people started falling out and the drill instructors were yelling at us to keep marching. Some did, most of us didn't. Fainting onto pavement couldn't have felt good and we just wanted to make sure they weren't hurt. I do remember a meeting in the dayroom to discuss 'the logic' of marching over your compatriots.

You're going to hear more stories like this as recruiters are compelled to scrape the bottom of the barrel, as the best and most experienced training personnel gets sent to Iraq and as the military in general implodes. Every president has to work with the armed forces left him by the previous administration. Bush isn't leaving jack.

Look, those are our guys, and they volunteered for this. We would never abuse a prisoner.

Our Navy Chief instructor was divorcing or something, so he was temporarily relieved (for a week, I think) during my basic training (or maybe he took a week's leave, I dunno. They certainly never told recruits anything). He was plenty loud and profane, but there was no physical abuse.

Neither the Navy Chiefs in bootcamp nor the Marine DIs in AOCS touched us. It was handled appropriately.

When I was in Basic, at Ft. McLellan 23 years ago, the only time anything even remotely close to this was when our second DI, in a fit of God-knows-what, allowed the holdovers to trash our barracks. He was summarily relieved, a big pow-wow was called to straighten things out with the troops, and we went back to normal operations. This abuse crap sounds like the Russian Army...

this is a change in basic training as anyone who had read the above comments and seen what the standard has been over decades. but bb can only repeat lamebaugh's ranting points, never provides links (how could he, every thing he says is proven wrong and has nothing but an rw echo chamber motive.

acts like the ones in the article do not promote unit cohesiveness and only breed contempt for the leaders. Both of those results are contrary to natioal needs. Anybody else get the idea that not even bb believes the stuff coming out of his ... uhhh ... keyboard?
