Natalee Holloway: Kalpoe Brothers Ordered Released

Update, 11/30/07: Kalpoe brothers ordered released again.

****

Update: More Here, this thread is ending.

Bump and Update: 7/4/05 1:55 pm. The Judge has ordered the release of the Kalpoe brothers, Deepak and Satish. Joran van der Sloot will be detained for up to another 60 days.

A judge has ordered the release of two of the three suspects being held in the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, court officials said Monday.

Through their mothers, the three say this is what happened:

The Kalpoes' mother has said one of her sons admitted lying to protect Van Der Sloot and said he and his brother took the Dutch youth and Holloway to a beach and dropped them off.

Anita Van Der Sloot also has said her son changed his story and admitted being alone with Holloway on the beach, saying he then left her because she wanted to stay there.

Update: 7/4/05 12:45 pm. Hearing is Over. The judge may rule later today. Murder Charges were not filed according to one of the brothers' lawyers.

12:00 pm. The three suspects are in court for a hearing at which prosecutors will argue for their continued detention. For a laugh, check out this parody, Entire Population of Aruba Now in Custody.

Update: 7/3/05 1:20 pm. I'm leaning towards thinking that none of the three teens in custody killed Natalee. I think one of them would have cracked by now. One possibility that makes some sense: The brothers dropped Joran and Natalee at the beach, Natalee would not go as far as Joran wanted, he got mad and left her there. Whatever happened to her may have happened as she tried to find her way back to the hotel. [Note: Mrs. Van der Sloot now says Joran left Natalee on the beach because she wanted to stay there.]

Update: 7/2/05 9:15 pm: Holland is sending war planes to find Natalee:

Holland will send three F-16 warplanes rigged with search equipment to find Natalee Holloway, Aruban authorities said Saturday, as U.S. lawmakers increased pressure on the Aruban government to do more to find the Alabama teenager nearly five weeks since she disappeared. The three planes, equipped with infrared and sonar-scanning capacity, were expected to arrive Sunday afternoon, said Aruban government spokesman Ruben Trapenberg.

Update: 6/29/05 7:15 pm:No luck with the search team from Texas. Some are already leaving the island. Case seems stalled to me.

Update: 6/28/05 4:15 pm: Aruba's leader today asked for the help of the Dutch marines.

Bump and Update: 6/28/05, 12:00 pm: There's very little new to report. Right now, it seems like the media is just re-running statements of the families. Natalee's mother says she's devastated that Joran's father was released. Joran's mother insists her son is innocent. If there's no search progress, watch for a replay and replay of the interviews.

Bump and Update: 6/26/05, 5:00 pm:The father of Joran van der Sloot has been ordered released. And one of the Kalpoe brother's lawyers said the brothers are getting angry at Joran for trying to put the blame on them.

Aruban police freed the father of a Dutch suspect arrested in the disappearance of an Alabama teenager, the man's wife said, hours after a party boat disc jockey held in the case was ordered released.

Bump and Update: 6/26/05, 12:45 pm: The Court ordered the party boat disc jockey released. The others will remain in custody.

6/26/05, 9:00 am: The five suspects are due to appear in Court Sunday where a decision will be made on their continued detention. On Friday (see below, 6/24 update) I questioned whether the arrest of Joran van der Sloot's father was motivated by a desire to put pressure on his son to make him talk. According to an Aruban offical who appeared on Geraldo's show last night, that's exactly what happened.

The father of the Dutch teen suspect was taken into custody in order to make his son talk, Aruba's justice minister said Saturday.

“I think they’re trying to put some acts of pressure on the son,” Justice Minister Rudy Croes told FOX News' Geraldo Rivera in an exclusive interview.

Update: 6/24/05 8:15 pm: The Aruban authorities announced the allegations against the five in custody. Joran van der Sloot's father is suspected of complicity in pre-meditated murder; complicity in murder; and complicity in kidnapping. The two brothers, Joran and the disc jockey are suspected of murder and being accessories to murder and kidnapping.

Joran's lawyer was on Greta's show tonight. Two items of note: Unlike the U.S., there is a parent-child privilege in Aruba. A parent cannot be compelled to be a witness against his or her child. Also, there is no crime of obstruction of justice in Aruba. So, the father's arrest means he is suspected of more than knowing something about his son's potential involvement.

Joran's lawyer used to work in the Government legal department under Joran's father, who was acting chief of the department. Depak Kalpoe's attorney says the Government is withholding evidence. Both lawyers said they were very surprised about the detention of the father.

Question: Could the authorities have arrested the father to put pressure on the son?

Joran's mother said Joran has changed his story:

He says 'Mom, I dropped the girl at the beach. I walked with her, I left her because she wanted to stay there. I left and I don't know what happened,'" the mother, quoting her son, told CBS News Correspondent Kelly Cobiella. "'I should have brought her to a responsible adult. That I blame myself, and I will blame my whole life, but the truth will come out and I will be out of here soon.'"

Bump and Update: 6/23/05, 4:00 pm: Aruban law enforcement is turning up the heat. The father of Joran van der Sloot, who is an Aruban judical official, has been arrested by police.

Aruban police on Thursday detained the father of a Dutch teen already in custody in connection with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the teen's mother said. "My husband was just picked up by police," Anita van der Sloot, referring to Paul van der Sloot, said in a telephone call to The Associated Press. "I don't know what to think."

Mariaine Croes, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Caren Janssen, told CNN: "There is a reasonable suspicion that he knows something and is involved in the disappearance."

That's five people now in custody.

Bump and Update: 6/21/05, 9:00 pm: On Greta tonight: Joran is cooperating. Two of his lawyers went to see him yesterday and today and he is holding up okay, stressed somewhat, but okay. Also, Joran's father picked him up at a McDonalds at 11pm the night Natalee disapeared and took him home. Joran then snuck out and went to Carlos and Charlies where he met Natalie. The rest is unknown. At least one of the two brothers is also cooperating, according to his lawyer - and sticking to his story.

Greta is back in Aruba and she and Beth Holloway went to the van der Sloot's house (camera crew in tow) and the father very politely invited them in - without the cameras. They stayed 90 minutes. No word about what was said, other than all the parents are very distraught. Mrs. Vandersloot kissed Beth Holloway goodbye (cameras recorded their leaving.)

Update:6/21/05, 9:40 am: A company named Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team is flying in to search the island. The group conducts searches on horseback. What if she's in the ocean? Where was the "party boat" on the night in question? The boat owner isn't saying so far. The family is preparing to file a lawsuit against Aruba to obtain their investigative records.

Bump and Update:6/20/05, 2:30 pm: A judge in Aruba has extended the detention of Steven Croes, the "party boat" disc jockey who was arrested on Friday.

An Aruban judge on Monday ruled that there is enough probable cause to continue holding a fourth suspect in the disappearance of American tourist Natalee Holloway, FOX News has confirmed.

Bump and Update:6/19/05, 5:30 pm:The police questioned Joran Van der Sloot's father for a second time today. Police maintain he is a witness and not a suspect.

Bump and Update:6/18/05, 11:30 pm:Police today questioned Joran Van der Sloot's father. CNN reports that the Judge denied the father's request to visit his son, but is allowing the mother to visit.

Bump and Update:6/18/05, 7:30 pm: There's been another murder on the island, unrelated to Natalee, but authorities have already located the body. (Fox News.) The three suspects are being moved to a prison. They have been held at the police station until now.

Bump and Update:6/18/05, 2:00 pm: The judge extended the detentions of the three suspects Saturday. Croes, the disc jockey, is expected to be brought before a judge on Monday.

Bump and Update:6/17/05, 3:00 pm: There's no shortage of suspects in Natalee Holloway's disappearance. Police arrested Steven Croes today, a party boat disc jockey, and her mother is expecting more arrests. Also, the court granted the prosecution's motion to keep Antonio Carlo, one of Joran van der Sloot's attorneys from visiting him because he has also spoken with the released security guards, effectively removing him from the case. The Court has ruled on Joran's father's motion to visit his son, but the ruling is not public.

Update:6/16/05, 9:00 pm: No news. To give you an idea of how little news there is, Greta visits Carlos and Charlie's and interviews customers, asking why it's so popular and if they feel it's safe.

Update:6/15/05, 8:15 pm: Fox News reports one of the suspects wants a new lawyer.

Update:6/15/05, 8:00 pm: When forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, who has an opinion about everything, admits we know nothing and all is just speculation, you know it's true. A reporter on Fox News says the authorities won't say what they found in the search. So Geraldo's theory that this was a Robert Chambers-Jennifer Levin rough sex type case is just a theory. Geraldo is back in New York and Greta is now in Aruba.

Update:6/15/05, 11:00 am: Suspect Joran Van der Sloot's father, a judge on the Island, is going to file a motion to see his son. And police today searched the home of the 17 year old Dutch teen. The three teens appeared in court today for a hearing described only as one relating to documents being withheld from them. (Could the documents be the statements of the released security guard(s) pertaining to the alleged jailhouse admissions of one brother and Van der Sloot which the guard(s) say show inconsistent stories?)

Update:6/14/05, 7:30 pm: The search is over for tonight. No success. According to the released security guards, the three have told differing versions while in jail. This may be the beginning of the unraveling, or it could be finger pointing. The FBI is on scene, assisting with the search.

Update: 6/14/05, 2:00 pm: Police have now launched a new search near the Marriott. One of the released security guards said he had a jailhouse conversation with one of the two brothers being held who told him that the brothers had dropped Joran and Natalee off at the Marriott. This is a significant change from their first version that the three of them dropped Natalee off at the hotel.

Update: 6/13 11:00 pm: The two security guards have been released from jail.

Update: 6/13 6:00 pm: The security guards' lawyers filed motions seeking their release today.

Update: 6/12 8:00 pm: Natalee's mother thinks the two security guards should be released. The FBI has asked that she refrain from further media comments for 24 hours. (Fox News.)

Update: 6/12 5:00 pm: Fox News report that the substance believed to be blood that was sent to the U.S. for testing turned out not to be blood. The parents say Aurban officials were slow to react and aren't keeping them informed.

Update: 6/11 8:30 pm: Prime Minister just interviewed on Fox and says he expects the case "to be solved tonight or by tomorrow morning." Translation (in my opinion): She's dead and they can't announce it yet.

Update: 8:15 pm: Natalee Holloway's mother and stepfather were on Geraldo. She kissed Geraldo on the cheek when she came on. He's such a pro. He arrived in Aruba earlier today and already convinced the mother that he would leave no stone unturned to help find out what happened to her daughter. The parents were very, very frustrated. The authorties are just giving them generalities, like "we're making progress." The mother said she didn't know about the blood being found in the car until Geraldo told her. The authorities hadn't. The mother said she's prepared for the worst.

The parents also said they had met Joran Van Der Sloot, the 17 year old son of the Judge, and the mother said she didn't like him, he was arrogant and cold. The stepfather said when he first met the boy he didn't think the boy could have done this, but after 30 minutes, he was sure he wasn't telling the truth.

Update: 7:00 pm. No body, no confession, no DNA results on blood found in car. No change from this morning.

Update: 3:45 p.m. Police confirm that DNA was taken from a blood sample and sent to the U.S. yesterday for analysis. They won't disclose the results. (Fox News Live)

Update: 3:00 pm. Conflicting stories continue. The three teens appeared in court and the judge denied their release. The security guards are still behind bars.

Police have back-pedaled off of earlier statements that Natalee Holloway is dead and they have found the body. They will not confirm either way now. Nor will they confirm the rumor that blood has been found in the car of one of the three boys.

My take: The earlier report of her death is true, but a policeman spoke out of turn and they now believe that disclosing this information will compromise their case or that the parents had not yet been told. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about who is responsible, although it seems that the security guards should be released.

Best coverage now is on Fox News. Geraldo's there with Rick Salinger and they are doing an excellent job of separating out the rumors and refusing to jump to conclusions.

Original Post 6/11 12:24 a.m.

One of the three young men arrested yesterday in the Aruba disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, has told police "something bad happened" to her and is leading police to the beach and lighthouse where they had taken her after leaving Carlos 'N Charlies.

The AP and CNN initially reported the teen had confessed to killing her, and now have amended their statement to say he said "something bad happened" to her.

Police aren't saying which of the three made the admission. Two of the three are brothers, and the third is the 17 year old son of a man about to become a judge who had become romantically involved with Holloway during her trip.

Meanwhile, the two black security guards who had alibis are still in jail. They were arrested when the three said they had dropped Natalie back off at the hotel and saw a "dark colored" man approach her.

The police said the two black guards were not cooperative. How could they be if they didn't know anything about the incident?

Now you know what will be on cable news all weekend.

"False accusations can do a lot of damage..." Yes Ras, they sure can. Paula Jones and Whitewater come to mind. Then there's that whole Iraq thing. I'm glad that we as a nation are going to get to the bottom of this crime in Aruba; I'm quite sure that the horde of media attention will ensure that justice is served. Meanwhile, poor, unattractive people dying in all major U.S. cities, foul play suspected, coverage cancelled for lack of interest. Victims of genocide mount today, coverage cancelled because it is "off message".

That is sad, but i told you this would be the case, so sad for the family, when you kill a woman you kill Generations of hope. now the guys who are useless will pay for life without hope, it will be justice and sad also.

In a related story, Time Warner Cable announced they would be adding the "Missing Attractive Young White Woman Channel" to their "news" lineup.

Hmm. Pretty white girl missing; persons of color in jail. As others have pointed out, it's a good thing lynching has gone out of fashion.

Off-topic comments and sniping have been deleted.

    Good work by F.A.I.R.
Bill O'Reilly explained, "As you may know, we do not speculate here on 'The Factor.' We have no idea what happened to Natalee or why she left the bar with some Aruban men. I've heard some irresponsible media speculate about that, and it makes me angry." (6/9/05) "Looks like she's dead because the five people, two arrested, three interviewed, are all shady characters." (6/6/05)

wow I find this very interesting. sorry for the double post. According to Tom from Aruba at Scared Monkeys:
The Aruban people are especially frustrated by the American media. Bill O’Reilly is being vilified after his show last night insinuating that the drug lords are so influential in Aruba that they are trying to make the story to go away so the US government will not look closely at them. So FOX is persona non grata. Rumors are abound that the CNN reporters have been abrupt with the people they have been in contact with and are writing stories that are not true. So CNN is not as disliked as Fox but still not very well liked. So today, we were amazed that on ARUBADAG.COM , the national television and radio chain, had a large graphic pointing there American readers to Scared Monkeys as the authoritative news source for the Natalee Holloway story. Both Red and I said a big WOW

GregZ - Reporters being abrupt? Not having their facts straight? I can hardly believe it. Greg, how many people did you interview to determine that CNN is better than Fox? I mean, you wouldn't want any false accusations, eh? ;-)

For years now Aruba has been one of the favorite places for wealthy white folks from around the globe to escape to for the winter . They fly down there and sit out the cold weather spending all that money they've saved avoiding taxes. They just love it there, lots of friendly compliant Black people to serve them, truly a white man's paradise. Sooner or later one of their daughters was going to get the itch for some dark meat. Since lynching Black people on the island wouldn't go over too well with the natives, they have to do the next best thing, chop up the offending race traitor for shark chum. Better that than bear the shame she would surely bring down upon the family when she gives birth to a zebra. If the FBI wants to find her body, they better go shark fishing for Oceanic White Tips.

Jim if you read the link I didn't interview anyone. I found some info and passed it along. Its the people of Aruba who grew tired of the American media bad mouthing the entire country for the acts of a few.

I ran across a bit on CNN about Aruban law as a Dutch protectorate. Interesting operation which might put the current investigation into some focus. "Aruba is a Dutch protectorate, and its judicial system is pegged to the Dutch system, in which people are arrested on suspicion of a crime, but not formally charged until later." As this: "Initially, the police can hold someone for two days. They're not required to bring them before a magistrate until 72 hours. And the initial two can be extended for eight days and then two more periods of eight days. So that's about 26 days. And then another four months. So you're up to 146 days..." I don't know if the parents are expecting this to be consistent with 'American justice' with some kind of resolution now. I think as a parent this is a horrid situation to be in; I couldn't stand it myself.

Good thing no one else is missing...that would really suck... Luckily, FoxSpews and CNN are on top of things and she's the only one unaccounted for in America... Thank God... I'd hate to think there are more out there, and no one cares...that would suck...

Luckily, FoxSpews and CNN are on top of things and she's the only one unaccounted for in America... Please - when being snarky, do keep the countries straight. She's unaccounted for in A-R-U-B-A, which apparently is only 19 miles across but still apparently harder than you can imagine to keep track of everyone.

For years now Aruba has been one of the favorite places for wealthy white folks from around the globe to escape to for the winter . That's right, Aaron. She deserved to die. Pure racist claptrap.

TL, how unusal is it to have the mother of the victim meet the suspects? It seems she has talked to all five men in custody. I find this rather strange.

There are still 6 billion or so people on earth, right? How many are unaccounted for? I'll never understand how this is newsworthy outside of Aruba or this girl's hometown. It's most unfortunate for this poor girl's family, but there are issues that effect more than a handful of people that remain unreported. I just don't get it, never will.

kog.... Aruba is a tourist spot...generally free of violent crime ( I think I heard there is something like 1 murder a year there?) so... a missing college kid (who was there with a group of kids) is news... like it or not.

And we must understand, were our child missing in this manner, we'd do everything we could to get it on TV, and I doubt we'd be worried about WHY it's on TV -- because she's young, white, and pretty. You'd just want as much attention as possible focused on finding your child, from wherever it comes. That said, it seems to me we've now come full circle in the news media, to the times pre-9/11 when Chandra Levy was THE story. Now we have Aruba and Jacko, and not very much on that little war thing we're involved in overseas, where thousands of innocents have been blown to bits, shot to pieces.

JLvngstn, You're right, but that's not my point. My point is that these parents, white yellow blue, whatever, don't give a SH*T why they're getting attention, they naturally just want it. Criticism of the origins of that attention is something completely different.

They just love it there, lots of friendly compliant Black people to serve them, truly a white man's paradise. Odd to make that statement when the island is more hispanic than black. K-dog - it shouldn't be news, but this is the wave of the "news" future. Pretty white females who go missing will be stories weeks on end for mushy shows like Greta. Not because of a continuing leves of the 7 standards that make something newsworthy, but because something has to fill the air time. --BigTex

Hotels and restaurants and any tourist service jobs that deal directly with people, are most usually filled by Black people on Aruba. It's a matter of maintaining that Caribbean getaway image. So if you're white Hispanic or even Black Hispanic, you're actually discriminated against in these jobs on this island, as well as on other islands in the Caribbean. I think they call this Anglo-ism. The guy who was most recently arrested, Steve Gregory Croes, apparently works on a boat. [link deleted, not in html format] One of the great things about the Caribbean is how easy it is to get rid of a body. All you have to do is find deep water where pelagic sharks school. Anyone who knows Aruban waters knows exactly where to go. A bleeding corpse will draw these sharks within minutes. 8 to 12 Oceanic white tips can consume a human corpse completely within hours. 20 to 30 can consume one within minutes.

hey, i got a question unrelated to aruba but related to this post. talkleft has 3 "bump and updates" on this story. i know what an update is, but what's a bump? and keep it clean, ok?

Skippy: "Bump" means that the story is "bumped" back up towards the top of the front page as if it were a new item when it's updated. (I know you shouldn't use a word to define a word, but you get what I mean). Aaron: You're warm. Try following the above syntax example exactly, but substitute the URL you're citing for the EXAMPLE URL within the quotes, and put the words you want for the text link, like the word "here" for the EXAMPLE words "linked text" in the example. I used to think TL was a pain for making us use the HTML syntax, but now I've memorized it and it is pretty easy. ;-)

I wish there were a Senator Proxmire in the senate just so that there were a voice for significant issues in this country. Again, much sympathy to this family but this is a regional story at best.

"Pretty white females who go missing will be stories weeks on end for mushy shows like Greta." hmmmm, anyone heard from Mfox lately?

I don't like the idea of arresting the father just to put pressure on the son, but then I don't like extraordinary rendition and torture either, so I guess I am a liberal. You know, someone who believes in due process, civil and human rights. Pretty quaint values, I will grant you, but they still have appeal to me.

This case is dead in the water unless Joran cracks, and he has no incentive to...if he did kill her, he'll let them prove it...if he didn't...no case... In Aruba, no body, no conviction (and only one in Dutch legal precedent, so don't look for it here)... The brothers can get as pissed off as they want, but if they did drop him off with Nats at the beach, as they're saying, then they don't know what happened to her anymore than we do, and Joran knows that... [deleted for language and insults]

LOL Sarcastic... the sharks haven't got me yet! Besides - I'm not the kind of pretty white girl that people are that interested in finding. I'm more the kind of pretty white girl who is "too smart for my own good" to quote my parents, and who would end up in most countries being "too opinionated and outspoken". Add to that being a single mom with a bi-racial son and there goes my Texas Search Team. I picture myself more the bag over the head getting stoned in the village square type of blonde, blue-eyed white girl... That said, with all due respect to the Holloway family (who understandably will take all the publicity and help they can get), I pretty much feel like once you leave America (tourist destination or not - BALI is a tourist destination after all), you are at the mercy of the local justice system and it is a very bad idea (even suicidal) to get cocked out of your mind and drive around with people you don't know. Despite Aruba's pristine record, I can't imagime many places where I could stumble off barely conscious and wake up unscathed face down on the ground the next morning. Jamaica? Ha. Central America? Ha. Indonesia? Ha. Perhaps Nassau or Bermuda. Her family appears to have extensive influence with someone. America also seems to have what I would consider undue jurisdiction in this case - If I was an Aruban official I'd tell us to Butt Out. Bad things happen outside of American justice (and inside, these days). Remember that when you travel. I predict that Natalie either was left on a beach passed out and drowned accidentally, or is, as Aaron said, disposed of in unrecoverable ways. I'm sorry for the Holloways - it's tragic and especially hard to accept that their daughter was irresponsible to the point of being complicit in her demise, IMHO.

And the publicity does what beside make Joran look guilty and criticize the Aruban investigators as idiots. So please, someone enlighten me as to how the coverage is helping the family.

mfox: you may get a little kick out of this Rant On Natalee's Parents , or you might not... Either way, you're saying many things Blaghdaddy's thinkin'...

why hasn't antone thought of the possibility of maybe Natalie was taken to south America. South America is very close to Aruba and its just a theory that it is possible to abduct some one and take them by boat to S A.

Does anybody think that these boys may not have harmed Natalee?? Maybe they are innocent?

Strange how there are a number of comments 'Poor little white girl" in a number of the responses. The fact is someone has committed a crime obviously a murder. It's a shame race has to be brought up time and time again...

Broganjade You're missing the whole point: the only shame in this whole circus is that such a fuss is made about certain missing members of certain "races" and nothing is whispered about thousands of missing members of "other races." Where's your outrage over the thousands of "non-fussed and hysteria-ized" missing cases about which the media cares not a whit? Thy words show thee to be a hypocrite, dear fellow. And you might like this reason from Blaghdaddy on why Natalee's Parents should shut up... And Blaghdaddy Knows What Happened to Her Anyways...

Tl, Blagh thinks you've got some bugs in your comment section...
