CJ Rehnquist Will Not Resign

by TChris

Breaking News ... per CNN ... The Chief Justice announced today that he will stay on the job as long as his health permits ... with luck (although these are not the Chief's words) until President Bush surrenders his office.

Send your positive energy toward the Chief Justice, and drink to his health.

Update: "I'm not about to announce my retirement," he told The Associated Press.

Long may he run ... tho I do suspect he's hanging on to ensure that Bush fills one vacancy at a time, rather than two at the same time. Not sure if he's doing this as a favor to Bush - i.e. at Bush's request, or cuz Rehnquist himself wants it that way. Many possibilities. But I most certainly will drink to his health.

I too will drink some tea to his health, not for political reasons as i don't care for much of his leanings, but the guy is a fighter, i like that.

I get the feeling that he really doesn't need to submit his resignation because fate has told him that he'll be dead before a resignation would come into effect. Also he is an egoist with his self-designed striped robe and all so he loves the attention that he receives by being coy. I really don't think politics are part of his ploy. Either way I hope he dies a happy man regardless of his politics.

It seems like every member of the Republican establishment has announced that Rehnquist was ready to exit the stage, except Rehnquist. Clearly, he's getting the bum's rush from the Bush Crime Family and their faithful media echo chamber. I think he wants to be left the hell alone so that he can depart with the dignity he feels he deserves.

It's time for Rehnquist to step down, and not because of his politics. I, too, have respect for the man and the position he holds. But a man can only be a warrior so long. His health problems will do nothing but put a damper on the upcoming court; at his age, it's likely he'll get worse before he gets better. He's served his country well. He needs to take care of himself now.

His prognosis points to the likelyhood that he cannot last until Jan of '09. Once diagnosed, the 1 year survival rate for anaplastic carcinoma is about 20%. I believe that was reported as the type of cancer he has.

His devotion to and love of his job -- for good or ill -- gives him the will to live. His wife of many decades died not so long ago. If he resigns, what keeps him going? Makes sense, from a purely personal point of view, for him to hang in there.

I suspect that he got tired of hearing he was on his way out. "I'll go on my own timetable" is a perfectly human reaction to all the (apparently) unfounded speculation.

What if Rehnquist has really come to loathe Dubya privately? Just throwing it out there for the sake of argument.
