Another One Bites the Dust

by TChris

Rep. "Duke" Cunningham's profitable relationship with a defense contractor (TalkLeft background here) spawned a criminal investigation that would have been an unpleasant campaign issue. Cunningham has decided not to seek reelection, creating an open congressional seat in his San Diego area district.

FBI: We Didn’t Have The Evidence, But Arrested Him Anyway The FBI admitted today in a story in the New York Times, that newly released declassified messages show that they lacked sufficient evidence to arrest a Portland lawyer, Brandon Mayfield, last year in connection with the Madrid train bombing. Mayfield was released later when the FBI realized they messed up the fingerprint comparison in a rash attempt to arrest someone, anyone, and as Mr. Mayfield is a Muslim, he clearly fit the profile I guess.

But he keeps the House! Cunningham should resign today. There's a special election coming in Nov. (Thanks Arnie) so there is plenty of time to submit candidates. Hell, Governator hisself was elected on an 11 week campaign. It may be a pipe dream but here is one more district that the Dems could take. However, the 50th is a nest of neoc**ts. It's the rich neighborhoods north of San Diego. Del Mar, Encinitas and Dukes own new neighborhood, Rancho Santa Fe, one of THE most expensive neighborhoods in southern California. As one venerable Japanese heart surgeon used to say to me before a particularly tough case: "Good luck to us."

Che, Exactly. Worse, this district is likely to elect a new rep just as conservative, if not more so, than Duke Dumbsh*t.

Dadler, Dennis Morgigno was inerviewing Chalmers Johnson last nite on a segment called "Forefront". It was on the San Diego channel (the Padre's games channel). Like finding a pearl in the oyster. Too bad I had to skip back and forth b/w that and Democracy Now.

"Hell, Governator hisself was elected on an 11 week campaign." Calling that an 'election' is stretching the facts considerably, Che. Ahnuld did, however, hold a Whitesnake concert in Fresno. Before Diebold put him into power with electrons.

PIL, Thank you for the clarification. I agree.

It now appears that there may be no ethics investigation for two reasons: 1. The ethics committee is in self destruct mode. 2. There needs to be one congressperson, just one, to sign the ethics investigation request. Think they can find someone? Not in Bizarro World.

HAHAHA! So true. And who would have ever guessed that Dee Snyder would be shilling out for Repubs in his dotage?

Probably the best blog regarding the Cunningham scandal has been Talking Points Memo by Josh Marshall. He broke it, covered it when it was ignored by the mainstream media and the House Ethics Committee. Kudos to TPM.
