Bush May Announce Supeme Court Pick in Next Few Days

The New York Times reports:

Administration officials said on Monday night that President Bush's selection process for a Supreme Court nominee was moving far faster than they expected, a signal that there could be a candidate within the next few days.

Just as I predicted earlier today:

Prediction: Bush will announce his Supreme Court pick earlier than scheduled - within the next few days - to deflect attention from this scandal. Will the furor erupting over RoveGate make him play nice and give us a mainstream moderate to placate us?

Now just cross your fingers and hope Bush decides he can't take any more heat and he'd rather scr*w the radical right than America.

Update: The Washington Post looks at possible choices from the Fifth Circuit - which includes Texas.

Draft Prado.

Update: According to The Hill, Bush has assured the radical right Alberto Gonzales will not be his choice. While I'm glad about Gonzales, it makes me think he might pick a right wing ideologue after all. Is there no limit to his arrogance or does The Theology just own him that completely?

I know who it will be, and you don't.

"If only the Fuhrer knew." Speculations about changes in Genghiz Bush's character ended twenty-five years ago, when he fried his brain solid snorting coke off a hooker's pre-cool tattoo. It will be the rigid shaft, all the way down the line. They don't have no second act.

I don't think he will announce it, not yet. I'm sure the Rovians are banking that the media will speculate about who the nominee will be until Friday afternoon, when they can do their special "Restoring Honor and Dignity to the White House" dump of the latest incriminating documents. Because god forbid people actually learn what the government does. That's, like, terrorism and stuff.

Now just cross your fingers and hope Bush decides he can't take any more heat and he'd rather scr*w the radical right than America. Wishful thinking. In the reality based world, the nominee must be controversial enough to distract the media and the dems from their current obsession with treason in the White House. That won't happen with a moderate candidate that will easily be confirmed. It will only happen with one that returns the nuclear option to the table. Hang on to your hats. This one is going to be a doozy.

I'd like to know where you get your optimism from. My supply is gone. He doesn't do compromise, he doesn't do diplomacy, he doesn't do reality and he only cares about what his right wing cabal thinks.

Reuters quotes a "Republican strategist with close ties to the White House" as admitting that getting Rove off the front page is part of the calculation:
A Republican strategist with close ties to the White House described Clement as the leading candidate. "She's pretty untouchable," the strategist said, noting that she has attracted little attention for her judicial opinions, reducing the chances of a bitter confirmation fight over her writings. "Plus, it helps take Rove off the front pages for a week," the strategist said.
Could that strategist be Rove himself?
