Saddam Trial May Begin Before Mid- October

Appearing on CNN today, Iraq's national security adviser said that Saddam Hussein's trial may begin before October 15 - which would coincide with the vote on Iraq's new Constitution.

The trial will be telecast in Arab countries.

In related news, one of Saddam's lawyers is asking that the trial be moved to Sweden for safety purposes. And Saddam has asked to be allowed to meet Ramsey Clark, another of his lawyers, but the request has not been acted upon.

This Reuters article in a South African newspaper calls Saddam's defense team "motley."

Among those who will defend the overthrown president when he goes on trial for war crimes are a former US attorney general, a former French foreign minister who once represented Picasso, and a little known contracts lawyer from Jordan.....Officially, Saddam has registered four lawyers, according to officials close to the special tribunal, but an international team of 20 to 25 has also been retained by his family and will aide his defence, according to Issam Ghazzawi, one of the team.

....Sometimes even other lawyers can't tell who exactly is defending Saddam. One person who has appeared frequently on tele-vision saying he is one of Saddam's lawyers is Anglo-Italian Giovanni di Stefano, who once worked on behalf of Slobodan Milosevic.

Asked about Di Stefano's role, Ghazzawi was dismissive. "I don't know about him. He's not on the main team." - Reuters

I know a few other world leaders I would like to see standing right there next to their old friend, Saddam.

It is interesting that Cahlabi, is demanding that the judge, Raid Juhi, be dismissed for the sake of De-Bathification. It is also interesting that it is the same judge that put out a warrant on Muqtada al-Sadr for the Al-Khoei murder. Before the election, al-Sadr aligned with Chalabi (curveball), and he got to be the assistant prime minister. I am amazed by this aliance, but I guess it serves them both. The good news is that with a new Judge Saddam might be able to finally meet his attorney Ramsey Clark; his court appointed attorney does nothing and he is under constant US Marine guard. The american puppet judge who may be removed will only try one minor incident (he allegedly had 50 people shot as punishment for an assination plot) from a list of many greater crimes. This one incident will be enough to put him to death. Good for America because Saddam has a lot to say about America from the early 1979 when we installed him and supported his crimes against humantiy. Chalabi, as I remember, went to the Ministery where all the secret files were kept and took them as America bombed Iraq, and others looted the museums,. When will he drop his bombs? Will Sadaam live if he is actually allowed a real Nuremberg type trial or will he have a fatal accident, be killed by an Shia, or 'commit suicide.' The gut was a major creep, but he was our creep.

Correction: Saddam was our man in Iraq since 1959 not 1979 when he actually took over. linked text
