Wednesday Open Thread

We haven't had one of these in a while, and since I've got a lot of work to do today, the time is right.

Also, if you've had trouble posting comments the past few days, let me know in the comments. One poster has, and we're having a hard time getting him and his new computer past the typekey screen. It would help to know if it's happening to anyone else.

Helena Cobban's posts a report of Iraq war photos surfacing on an Italian porn site. I guess Bush's concern about his Abu Ghraib porn shots getting seen by those outside of his circle jerk was well founded. Oh, well no more elite porn club for the Bush wackers, Where is Ed Meese when you need him? All sounds pretty horrific; not such good PR for US.

Any chance of Pat Robertson facing terrorism charges? If any of us said something similar about GDub, would we have the FBI knocking at our door? Can a millionaire be a man of god, or more specifically a follower of Jesus? Can my grandmother get the money back she sent to the 700 club if they are deemed by the pres. to be a terror organization?

And on to another Bush wet dream...opening up the last best remaining northslope wilderness to oil compnay plunder. Here's a blog from the land of the Gwich'in and the 130,000-strong herd of the Porcupine caribou they depend on...all in peril now in the name of that black gold of 19th-century technology.

No comment, just letting you know my G4 on OS X isn't having any problems accessing your comments. And have fun at Drinking Liberally tonight! I'm sure Fat Tire will be the drink of choice seeing as how you greedy Coloradoans don't export it anymore, keeping it all for yourselves! I'll be sure to hoist a toast to the new Denver group tonight at Minneapolis' DL gathering (Liquor Lyle's on Hennepin).

I dont see how you can preach the bible and advocate the assassination of a country's president. I would think that his position on killing someone would be that you should only do it in defense of yourself, a loved one, or your nation. AND, Even if this guy really believes that the world would be a better place if the guy was whacked, he really is causing a big problem by saying that publicly. Bad move on his part.

Do some reading here. If we are to assume some of the insurgency is made up of both outsiders (most likely Shia) and former Bathists (Sunnis), does this mean we are heading in the direct of two large scale insurgencies? If this is the case, its very difficult to label all of the insurgents purely as religious zealots. Do I sense a growing nationalistic tone to some of their rhetoric? To hell with asking Bush about some noble cause, I want him or someone in the administration to explain how we ended up with a situation that our soldiers, after several years in Iraq, will be actively engaged and in pursuit of fighters who do not want Islamic rule in Iraq?

Whether you agree with GDub or not, you got to love that dude. Where else are you going to get stuff like this? "And so during these holiday seasons, we thank our blessings." —George W. Bush, Fort Belvoir, Va., Dec. 10, 2004 "After standing on the stage, after the debates, I made it very plain, we will not have an all-volunteer army. And yet, this week — we will have an all-volunteer army!" —George W. Bush, Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 16, 2004 "The truth of that matter is, if you listen carefully, Saddam would still be in power if he were the president of the United States, and the world would be a lot better off." —George W. Bush, second presidential debate, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2004 Now that's just funny man.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Conservative U.S. evangelist Pat Robertson, who called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, said on Wednesday he was misinterpreted and that the leftist leader could be removed through kidnapping.
"I said our special forces could take him out. Take him out could be a number of things including kidnapping," Robertson said of Venezuela's leader on his "The 700 Club" television program.
    This guy's an idiot.

Good luck with the Drinking Liberally meet up tonight! I hope the folks coming out use this chance to form some new friendships, commiserate with other reality based people, and get lit up in general. But with any get together with booze involved please be responsible. Don't get soused and then convince yourself that driving while intoxicated would be a novel way of having a good time. I've been trying to get a local chapter going here in Norman, OK. The only responses I've received have been from my friends, with whom I already meet up with and talk about the state of our nation. So here is a call out to anybody living in my area who would like to get this type of thing going on here in Oklahoma: Please respond to this comment.

yeah, I know I could use the Drinking Liberally site to announce the beginning of a new chapter, but I would like to know before hand the type of turn out to be expected. And I would like to get an idea of what local bar/restaurant would be the best for this club.

Man...what's the deal with everyone throwing the word "war" around all the time nowadays? Cant they just say they disagree with something and will not support whatever it is? I guess they think their best tactic is to scare people into agreeing with them.

With their "by any means" absurdist rhetoric, it looks like the American Legionaires are on a nostalgia kick. Specifically, they appear to be longing for the days when they were oh-so closely tied to that other 100% American organization, the Liberty League. Well, 100% American, except for that little attempted coup de'tat. Thank you Gen. Smedley Butler, USMC Ret.

    You mean these American Legionaires?
Dear Mr. President: [...] the United States Armed Forces should never be committed to wartime operations unless the following conditions are fulfilled: That there be a clear statement by the President of why it is in our vital national interests to be engaged in hostilities; Guidelines be established for the mission, including a clear exit strategy; That there be support of the mission by the U.S. Congress and the American people; and That it be made clear that U.S. Forces will be commanded only by U.S. officers whom we acknowledge are superior military leaders. It is the opinion of The American Legion, which I am sure is shared by the majority of Americans, that three of the above listed conditions have not been met [...} Sincerely, Harold L. "Butch'' Miller, National Commander American Legion

I'd like to ask Butch what was the exit strategy of WWII? What was the exit strategy of the Cold War? Sounds like the Legion needs a new National Commander.

    DA - Quotes Dan Froomkins:
I think that every arguably false, confused or misleading statement made by the leader of the Free World should be addressed by the journalists whose job it is to cover him.
You wouldn't know what Dan had to say about Clinton's lies, would you? I mean he is right. I just don't believe he universally applies it.

What was the exit strategy of the Cold War?
Creating Bin Laden's holy warriors to replace the threat posed by the Soviet Union, apparently.

Actually, sorry, maybe you were linking something else. Anyhow, I didn't find any Abu Ghraib attrocity photos. Sorry for the gory link, TL. Love the frivolous attitude of Jim and others who pretend that WAR is somehow so sacred that EVEN ONE STARTED BY A LIAR deserves to be saluted, but not served in or confronted as immoral and unjust. You know, those 'Hajis' don't value life like we do, as we "mow them down" (--Trent Lott).
