Hurricane victims apparently make a poor photo op for the Secretary of Defense.

Today, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Louisiana and toured a medical facility at the New Orleans international airport. He spoke to and shook hands with military and rescue officials, but walked right by a dozen refugees lying on stretchers just feet away from him, most of them extremely sick or handicapped, Reuters reported.

    Insurgents or victims, he can not tell, so is not taking any chances. MD cleared up the point of Rummy's mission with his link

    Check out this document that Larry Johnson has found, a National (disaster) Response Plan that the administration promulgated last December which seems to say explicitly that in the event of a catastrophic disaster the federal government need not wait for any explicit request for the local authorities in the affected regions. -- Josh Marshall

    Punisher, didn't you know that the document you linked to is a fake? PPJ and JR told me so (that was a joke, but I am sure they will tear apart this document at their earliest convenience).

    Donald Rumsfeld is a man of principle: the principle that "stuff happens." The Zen-like indifference to the misfortune of others, even directly in front of him, is admirable.

    A good photo-op would be of Condoleeza Rice showing up with a gift of expensive Ferragamo shoes for the survivors. There are many photo-ops yet to ruin. Cheney could be in one of them.

    Yeah, last night I volunteered at the GT Coliseum where hundreds of NOLA evacuees are staying. We had plenty of shoes but no Ferragamos. Clearly Condi was buying those to donate... where are you Condi, we need you!

Secretary Rumsfeld paused at the local hospital to have his daily bath in blood, before boarding a helicopter to his castle, where he was looking forward to a meal of fresh infants.

    In other news, among the dead African-Americans bobbing in the Mississippi River was none other than the corpse of Robert Novak, smiling and waving and sipping a Hurricane.
