Sunday Morning Katrina News

Geraldo continues his compassionate coverage. I just watched him and a member of the National Guard carry a woman in her wheelchair down three flights of steps at a nursing home. She wouldn't go without her bible, her dressing gown and her medicine and they got those for her.

Rick Leventhal is talking about the stench in the streets. He says they are told it is mostly coming from rotting meat.

The Boston Globe reports two bars have reopened in the French Quarter - they are serving warm beer.

The public risk health is now a major concern. Many kids have viral gastroenteritis.

There may be thousands still left and authorities are going house to house to find them.

I still can't believe you watch Fox News, J. But hey, I watch 'Dog' on A&E - so I can't say too much. Here's something from Reuters Just luv the headline: "New Orleans COLLECTS DEAD AS OFFICIALS DODGE BLAME"
"NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans began the gruesome task of collecting its thousands of dead on Sunday as the Bush administration tried to save face after its botched rescue plans left the city at the mercy of Hurricane Katrina."
Here's your chance, James Robertson; the perfect opportunity to help out.

I'm trying my damnedest to get down there and help, but the HHS is making it very difficult to get down there. First, they did their volunteer web site in Microsoft Access, which could not handle the traffic, so the site just shut down. I finally did get the application submitted. Now they want me to fill out a bunch of paperwork, including a document with a file extension I've never seen before, and for which I have no program that will open it. It's just maddening.

Update: The form they want me to fill out is the GSA SF61, which is for political appointees. So volunteers are political appointees? *shudder*

Ditto, Exactly. So now doing the right thing requires party approval. I'm sure the FBI file on volunteers is already being put together. I'd like to think I'm joking, but these days I just don't know.
