Lynndie England Sentenced to Three Years

Bump and Update: Lynndie England was sentenced to three years in prison.

Abu Ghraib prison guard Lynndie England was convicted today six of the seven counts against her.

England, 22, was found guilty of one count of conspiracy, four counts of maltreating detainees and one count of committing an indecent act. She was acquitted on a second conspiracy count.

The jury of five male Army officers took about two hours to reach its verdict. Her case now moves into the sentencing phase, which will determined by the same jury. She faces a maximum 10 years in prison.

The photos of her holding a prisoner by a leash and pointing at their genitals while smiling - and her own statement taken shortly after the investigation commenced - did her in.

"The accused knew what she was doing," said Capt. Chris Graveline, the lead prosecutor. "She was laughing and joking. ... She is enjoying, she is participating, all for her own sick humor."

An unfortunate case, I am at loss to decide which of the two is the uglier. The defendant or the evidence.

Great, now convict her superior officer and keep going up the chain of command until you get to the REAL war criminals and not merely the patsies. So much for only a few bad apples. RELEASE THE REMAINING ABU GHRAIB PHOTS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all likelihood, England would be serving a longer sentence if she were not female.

Almost identical to what she was going to receive with a plea bargain. Probably more airtight on appeal as well, as there were questions about the degree to which the plea was truly proper and voluntary.

Only 3? There are people in Gitmo who have served longer than that without even a trial! And when she gets out, she could have a lucrative career shilling books in redneck-ville for Ann Coulter. When prisoners get out of gitmo they get rendered! Extraordinarily! Oh well, a pfc gets 3 years. Big whoop. I have been punished for almost twice that with Bush.

Three years would be ok with me if they also followed up on those giving the orders

Lavocat, Right on. But if they release those photos (and videos) to the media people will be puking on their coffee tables.

And do you know WHY we will probably never see those photos and videos? well, it should be painfully obvious by now... Because there are a great deal of them; because they were taken at MANY locations; because the same mistreatment of detainees was widespread; and, most importantly of all: these photos and videos document war crimes on a massive and clearly well-thought out scale. A release of more photos and videos only increases the likelihood of Rummy seeing the inside of the docket in The Hague, if there is ANY justice in this world.

Well, at least we now know why Bush was so vehemently opposed to the ICC - he already had his secret little war in Iraq cooked up and didn't want such inconvenient things like war crimes to get in the way of his plans. Besides, we should all know the obvious by now: legal protections do NOT apply to non-Americans and legal obligations do NOT apply to Americans when dealing with non-Americans. It's called Imperial Hubris. Julius Caesar would recognize his handiwork in this administration's BLATANT disregard for the law.
