Did the Bush administration learn from its disaster management mistakes? Having botched its response to Hurricane Katrina, FEMA's work after Hurricane Rita should have been nearly flawless. Should have been.

Saying they were caught off-guard by the number of people in need, FEMA officials closed a relief center early on Wednesday after some of the hundreds of hurricane victims in line began fainting in triple-digit heat.

The midday closing of the Houston disaster relief center came as officials in areas hit hardest by Hurricane Rita criticized FEMA's response to the storm, with one calling for a commission to examine the emergency response.

    OK All you Right Wingers- How quick can you come up with a way to spin these complaints as being all Blanco and Nagin's fault?

    I don't think it's possible to fix a destroyed federal agency in three weeks--especially not one that's already stretched to its limit on a previous disaster. So I don't think it's reasonable to expect a stellar performance on Rita just because of a dismal performance on Katrina. And I don't think FEMA's response to Rita, in proportion to the scope of the disaster, was any better that it was with Katrina. If Beaumont and Port Arthur were part of a New Orleans-sized metropolitan area located below sea level, it would have been an exact repeat.

    Excellent point MB. It's pretty obvious that FEEBLEs response has been decimated by being under DHS. FEMA should be a cabinet level agency. Not that that would have helped a lot more under this misAdministration. Can anyone tell me any gov't agency that performs better under bushco than before? OSHA - Nope IRS - Nope EPA = BIG Nope FEMA - Please don't make me laugh FBI - Porn ... PORN!!! CIA - Ohhh jeebus Bueler ... Bueler ...?

    Heh, such a money quote. How do Republicans convince themselves that the entire government happening to fall apart at a time when the President and all of his friends hate the government is either a coincidence or Bill Clinton's fault?

    If the Rita work had gone better, you would have claimed it's proof that Bush doesn't care about Black people or red states.

    Well, let us review the THREE PROMISES that President Carter made to the American people when he created FEMA: • FEMA will always deliver equal services without regard to race or class. • FEMA will always have its own seat in the Cabinet. • FEMA will always be led by someone with direct emergency experience -- not a bureaucrat. Bush, desiring to destroy this list of promises as he desires to destroy Social Security and other Democratic accomplishments, took those promises and ripped them up. And instead? Got the Departimento dei Securezza Italiani and Hallifema -- operations committed to transfering private information into government coercion (DSI) and public funds into private hands (Hallifema), as expeditiously as possible, without apology.     Paul, at least the mafioso organizations are run efficiently. Now...how many people think a Recall Bush referendum would fail at this point?

    Adept.... How quick can you come up with a way to spin these complaints as being all Blanco and Nagin's fault.. Just as quick as you guys can seem to make everything Bush's fault. Actually...no spin is needed. The chain of command for things like this is #1 The Mayor...#2 The Gov ... #3 The Feds... So there is plenty of fault to go around, as long as you start at the first level ,which none of you have, and would like to go right to Wash DC. But of course, this makes you all partisen hacks....but whatever.
