Judith Miller Released From Contempt Order

Ok, it's time for Bill Keller to pony up. Editor and Publisher reports:

Judith Miller's second appearance before the grand jury probing the Plame/CIA leak case on Wednesday lasted only a little more than an hour but it was enough to earn a judge's order releasing The New York Times reporter from the contempt-of-court citation that landed her in jail. The order was still in place until her testimony was complete.

Besides liberating Miller, it also means The New York Times can no longer cite that order as a roadblock to keep it from presenting a full accounting of related matters. "I am delighted that the contempt order has been lifted, and Judy is now completely free to go about her great reporting as a very principled and honorable reporter," said Robert Bennett, one of Miller's attorneys.

Keller issued a staff statement Tuesday:

As we've told readers," Mr. Keller said, "once her obligations to the grand jury are fulfilled, we intend to write the most thorough story we can of her entanglement with the White House leak investigation."

The Wall St. Journal (free link) has more, and reports Rove may testify tomorrow.

She squealed like a little piggie. So much for protecting her sources.

"we intend to write the most thorough story we can of her entanglement with the White House leak investigation" It is going to be interesting to compare "the most thorough story" Bill Keller and his invisible friend Harvey R. Abbit can write with the most thorough story published in an actual newspaper over the byline of an actual reporter.

Harvey? Was he a Puka rabbit? I'm getting the feeling that this story is about to take a very strange twist and not one that certain people have thought they had predetermined. Me? I'll wait until the end of the month for the indictments but speculation is fun.

So much for her thinking she is above the law.

Gosh, it brings back a flood of memories of Former Reagan Attorney General Ed Meese...
Meese said Wednesday that it could be difficult to prove that officials knowingly violated laws prohibiting disclosure of covert CIA agents' identities, and prohibiting disclosure of confidential information. "There's no indication that any of the people I know about recognized or knew anything confidential about this particular fact, so there appears to be a lack of intent," Mr. Meese said.
    Slime.

    Miller gets an award
The Society of Professional Journalists, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior, was founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi.
(Empahsis mine) Who are they kidding?

None of the innocent people she helped kill will be free to go about their great lives any more. Their children are blown in half, their parents are turned to goo, and they themselves have lost that essential difference from splatter that marks a human being rather than the rag dolls of Judas Miller's disgusting propaganda for pay. She's a telltale heart. Anyone who considers her a beautiful human being is being paid to believe that.
I First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs. I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye --not even his --could have detected any thing wrong. There was nothing to wash out --no stain of any kind --no blood-spot whatever. I had been too wary for that. A tub had caught all --ha! ha!

My conscience orders me to hold her in contempt FOREVER. She could testify against the WHIG conspiracy, and earn some forgiveness, but that would involve risking her life, not bragging about how she went to prison for the noble purpose still not to be found in the war she lied for.

Hopefully (for their conscience sake) they were being sarcastic?

edger-Here is the link to SPJ to Give Judith Miller 'First Amendment' Award link She went to jail to protect her fifth ammendment rights after all, didn't she? Sulzberger and Miller had better resign if they want to save the NYT.

Squeaky: Incredible, isn't it? And it was such an incredible society we once lived in... To think we actually made it to the moon nearly 40 years ago. What the f*** has happened to us?

Miller honors are piling up. Not only is she getting a SPJ first ammendment award when she should be getting a fifth ammendment award, she is also giving awards. She can truly defend the constitution as the first and fifth ammendment are interchangeable for her, and mutually dependent.
Update: I guess Judy has better things to do than sweat over her impending story. Per reader Stephen J., Judy will also make a special appearance this weekend at an event at Cal State Fullerton by the [California] First Amendment Coalition honoring Mark Felt. From the press release: Miller, who went to jail to honor a pledge of confidentiality to her sources, will present a special award Saturday honoring Mark Felt (aka "Deep Throat"), the ultimate confidential source.
