Schapelle Corby Sentence Reduced: Not Enough

An Indonesian Appeals Court has cut Schapelle Corby's 20 year sentence imposed for importing 4 kilos of pot into Bali, a charge she has claimed she is innocent of, from 20 years to 15 years. Her family is devastated.

Corby's sister said her family was devastated by the appeal court's decision. "She didn't do it. She should be free," Mercedes Corby said. "I was expecting the Australian government to do something. We're not happy in this sentence and we will appeal immediately."

Her lawyer also complains:

"Her sentence has been reduced by five years to 15 years, but that is still inhuman," Mr Paris said. "This is only marijuana, not heroin. If the prosecutor appeals this case, then I will also appeal. I also will talk about the verdict with Corby."

    Boycott Bali for this reason, support Bali because of the suicide bombers. May you live in interesting times. As for Ms. Corby, I truly hope she is released as soon as possible. Unfortunately, having little to no credibility internationally at this point, our support is likely to mean nothing.

    Let's go get her. Send in recon and just go get her. They'd have her back in the US before Bali even knew what happened to her.

    Does anyone think that this ridiculous sentence is a reaction to US and its Australian backed policies that contravene the Geneva conventions? According to international law we have imprisoned thousands illegally; for them no hope for a fair trial, or any trial in most cases.

    Ok, what are we upset about from this story? The lenght of the sentence? The fact that she was convicted but says she is innocent? or The type of charge (pot) in general?

    Every time I see something about this story, I wonder just how many people gave a crap about this kind of thing when it was Indonesians getting sentences like this, and how many will continue to think of such things if this Corby woman is released. For some reason, I think the numbers in both cases will be somewhere very close to zero.

    Does the US lead the world in drug offense incarceration? Maybe if we lightened up, other countries would, as well.

    Well...I guess maybe I'm a little overzealous aboot sending in recon guys b/c they'll get her for sure. Does Australia even have a military? Maybe we should send Steve Erwin to go get her, eh?

    I am glad that both her family and her legal team are ready to keep on fighting to get justice done for her. Though I think a 5 year reduction is better than 0, I would hope that she would receive freedom soon. Or at least justice. As some articles in the Australian media say: no one in Indonesia has ever received a sentence longer than 10 years for possession of less than 10kg of marijuana.
