According to George Bush's daddy, when he was head of the CIA, outing a CIA agent is treason.

The CIA was and is one of the instruments of US imperialism. Gary Hart is a long-time representative of the American establishment. He supported the war on Iraq. It is no surprise that he also defends the Company and the reactionary Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

That's nice, but did outing Valerie Plame solve anything?

The CIA was and is a tool, like a hammer. It has no inherent moral qualty. It can be used for good or for ill, for reckless military adventurism or legitimate self defense. Valerie Plame worked on nuclear proliferation issues. Don't you think the United States has a legitimate, non-imperialist interest in such matters? An interest held in common with the rest of humanity . . .

Andreas-Yes that is true but now we get to eat our cake and have it too. Not too bad, eh?

@rea: Gary Hart is not only defending those within the CIA who are active in "nuclear proliferation issues". If you have not yet read "Inside The Company" you might want to do so. Which "nuclear proliferation" are you talking about? The US is the only country which has used nuclear weapons to kill people. It currently has thousands of nuclear weapons and it is threatening to use them.

Hart is defending, for instance, the legitimate tracking of nuclear materials, a process that is very seriously broken as a result of Bush and his CIA-breaking cronies, as rea said. That the US used nuclear weapons is moot, unless you think those rules are written on the wall and must be followed. That was FIFTY YEARS AGO, before there was a UN or even a Cold War to bring about a situation in 1963 where we now know two Russian sub captains gave the orders to light up the US, and we're only alive because a third captain countermanded. There have been other nuclear crises which are secret. But that's moot as well. The misuse of the (or a) CIA is a direct result of corporate profit motives. Those motives are not 'American' in any stretch of the imagination. You cannot find a single country in the world which is not involved in corporate profit motives, Andreas. Most countries have CIA-like agencies. Our problem is a lot bigger than your bigotry against America. It's bigger than feeling justified about your supposed higher standard of purity.
