Miers on Owens and Bush

by TChris

Harriet Miers on Priscilla Owens:

Knowing and watching her over the course of the years, knowing the incredible person that she is, and knowing what a highly capable and qualified jurist that she is, what's happened to her in the judicial process is surprising and disappointing. You would never expect that someone who is as well thought of in our state, across party lines, could experience what she's had to experience. It's just personally very, very disappointing that she has been treated the way she's been treated.

In the same April 2005 interview, Miers on Bush:

He is an inspirational guy. When people see that, they want to go to the ends of the earth for him. It's a really unique quality in somebody.

Anybody remember the "yes man" from Sharper Image or something that you could sit on your desk and it would say "Great decision!" and such?

This post, to me, makes it sound like Miers is laying the groundwork for Owens' nomination. Not likely, I supposed, but that's what it sounds like. I think she'll step down, I think Bush will nominate a right-wing bulldog in her place, and that this will backfire even worse. All the dems have to do is frame it as "First you give us this unqualified lackey, now you give us this 'qualified' fringe extremist. We will not treat this court with the kind of willful ignorance with which you treated and continue to treat Iraq."

Looking at Priscilla Owens, we can see clearly why no one in California likes (illegally-elected) Gov. Arnold's plan to redistrict using three retired judges. Lowering the bar is Bush's big talent.

That statement by Miers on Owens just shows what a Bush hack she is. Priscilla Owens was never widely respected by lawyers of both parties in Texas. In fact, in state-wide bar polls, she consistently was given the lowest approval ratings of all the justices on the Texas Supreme Court in state. And this was a court composed entirely of Republican judges. People were baffled by her ascension to the court in the first place. Before her election, she was not considered in any way of an attorney of any stature or consequence in the state.
