Argentinians Protest Bush

by TChris

President Bush was greeted by protestors when he arrived in Argentina to attend the Summit of the Americas.

Around 10,000 protesters chanted "Get out Bush!" today on the streets of the Argentinean resort which is hosting the Summit of the Americas. Celebrities including the Argentinean soccer legend Diego Maradona are among the demonstrators who have gathered at the resort of Mar Del Plata, where the two-day summit starts later today.

Maradona yesterday addressed a huge crowd of protesters before taking a train to the resort, describing Mr Bush as a "criminal" and wearing an anti-Bush T-shirt.

The Argentinean star called for peaceful protests. As he spoke, protesters hung from the train's engine, shouting: "Fascist Bush! You are the terrorist!"

The train, which also carried Bolivian presidential hopeful Evo Morales among the protesters, arrived before dawn today and by mid-morning thousands of demonstrators were on the streets.

Tens of thousands of people marched in a heavy rain Friday morning in Mar del Plata, demonstrating their opposition to the war in Iraq and protesting the Bush administration’s economic and military policies in Latin America. The march began shortly after 8 a.m. and filled 15 blocks with crowds chanting “Bush Out!” and “Fascist Bush, You Are the Terrorist!” Leading the march was Argentine Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and Bolivian cocalero leader and presidential candidate Evo Morales. Also in the front rank was a delegation from the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, the organization that challenged the former US-backed dictatorship, demanding the return of their “disappeared” children during Argentina’s “dirty war.” ... Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona, who arrived in Mar del Plata on a special train filled with demonstrators, told the crowd, “I love you very much. Thanks for being here. Argentina has dignity, let’s throw Bush out.” Maradona wore a shirt bearing Bush’s image and the words “war criminal.” Earlier, Maradona told reporters that Bush was “human garbage.”

You should remember that McCarthy was right. Here comes PPJ to defend McCarthyism, and Operation Condor, to boot. That makes sense since Operation Condor was a perfect analogy to the current "War on Terror". After all, those "Moslems" in Argentina were communist sympathizing terrorists. They were commu-terrorists. That's right...they were better off disappeared. As for Bush and his policies, they are no different than those we have been foisting on that part of the world well...forever. The economic meltdown of 2001, when many Argentinians were reduced to near starvation, is still fresh in people's minds so it's no surprise that Bush got that sort of welcome there. As the free trade disasters pile up, Latin America is increasingly ready to buck the U.S. (transnational corporation) model being pushed by Bush. There are alternative economic models that do not involve a country being plundered by foreigners. And it is hilarious to hear a few trolls bring up the violence of protesters in light of the mass murder that occurred in this same region at U.S. behest/complicity over many decades!

Nevermind the US-backed dictators who made people disappear in the thousands and tens of thousands. Neverming the US-backed Saddam Hussein's of South America. "I seem to remember the communists stirring one up for Nixon." Yeah, Nixon was a real hero to humanity too! That's why he allowed carpet-bombing of Cambodia, setting off the Pol Pot genocide of millions. But look out for the Communists! "As for Argentina, I repeat. The average American doesn't care about their opinion."
Glad to hear you side with ignoramuses once again, Jim.
"They provided no support during WWII," Hey, they took in Bush's grandfather's Nazi pals in the thousands. What do you mean they provided no support? "To get on the bus, you need to get your ticket punched." If you're oil-rich, you can blow up US airliners and Bushliar will still shake your hand. How did Kadafi get in, Jim? Because the Libyans rushed troops into our WWII effort? LOL "And if they weren’t rioting, you wouldn’t even know they existed." You are speaking of yourself, and your fellow ignoramuses. The point was that your claim that "Americans" don't care what America does in South America is only true of YOUR "American" friends -- not mine. I meet good Americans all the time who are concerned with the HISTORY of US support for DICTATORS and TERRORISTS. • Terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hssein, Islam Karimov, Moahmar Kadafi, General Pinochet, and most of the generals who carried on the reign of terror in Argentina for so many years. • Terrorists like Posada Carriles, the known bomber of a civilian airliner, who Bushliar is harboring in Texas, claiming that extraditing him AS REQUIRED BY INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS would expose him to ... get this ... torture. Yeah -- the torture of being found guilty of the crime and hanged or imprisoned for life. Bullyboy Jim, your criminals are in power now, but sic semper tyrannis, and the day will come when you will crawl back into your hole with the rest of the slime mold, your moment of glory over. Interestingly, I just returned yesterday from a 10-day trip to Argentina. I was in two cities, Buenos Aires and Cordoba. There is barely a wall in either city that does not have a poster or some anti-Bush graffitti. They are mightily pissed off also about how much Bush's security detail are going to inconvenience them. They really and truly understand what this man is about, the people I know well (all in the fourties or older) understand from personal experience. About 90% of Argentinans given the choice would vote to have Bush "dissapeared" into the river. It is interesting too that Cindy Sheehan is going to speak there, a "mother of courage" that Argentinians will admire as similar to their own Madres, who helped bring down the military junta of some years back.

Posted by Jim: "how little the American public cares about their opinions. Especially about Bush's security detail." Bullyboys are well understood in Argentina, I assure you. And a great number of Americans understand that while Bush needs a small army to protect him, Bill Clinton walked openly in crowds of tens of thousands in India, Africa, Kosovo, and South America. How was he able to do that? Because people respected America then. Bush can travel only if he carries his security state with him -- he is that hated. Glad to hear you side with ignoramuses once again, Jim. As for salt of the earth, you wouldn't understand the concept, since there is no salt in someone like you, at all. The presence of the US president in Argentina has been preceded by the imposition of a massive security clampdown. An army of 7,000 additional police has been deployed in the resort city, which has been divided with three concentric circles of chain-linked fencing. Residents of the area surrounding the summit site have been identified and provided with passes to enter and leave their own homes. “We’ve been imprisoned,” one of them told a local television network. A 100-mile no-fly zone has been declared surrounding the city, with orders to shoot down unidentified planes. In addition to the blanket of security imposed by the Argentine government, Bush is arriving with an entourage of some 2,000, much of it composed of security personnel. Last Friday, two giant US military cargo planes arrived in Buenos Aires carrying large quantities of arms and two helicopters for use in guarding the US president.

People in Latin America understand perfectly well what the words "free trade" mean when Bush utters them. It means, for example, screwing South American farmers by furiously subsidizing US farmers. I'm sure Latin American leaders read the papers, and see how easily the US reneges on NAFTA when some particular domestic lobby needs coddling, as in the softwood lumber dispute with Canada, where the US chooses to ignore the rulings of NAFTA tribunals. It makes far more sense for countries like Argentina and Brazil to form their own trading bloc, which is what they are doing through Mercosur. I'm not surprised in the least they are telling Bush to shove his free-trade agreement.

Slado, if you think the 30,000 people marching and chanting against Bush are "neo-communists", you don't understand Latin America at all. And Patrick, the stores, or the bank those people trashed -- it's not "their neighborhood". Just like the riot police they throw stones at is not "their riot police". The protest is aimed at the Latin American leaders, and it's very effective. It's a warning of the kind of reception that a free-trade agreement with the US would get. In 2001, rampaging protesters overthrew a corrupt and incompetent government that had nearly destroyed Argentina. You can be sure that the message is received loud and clear by the local politicians.

But the antiwar/antiBush coup protesters in the US are, indeed, nonviolent, as we have proven for five years. How many times have SA'ans told me that in Peru (or Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, etc.) there would have been a mass rally of millions in the streets, a national strike, and the dictator would fall! How many times I have defended the peaceful protests of those US Americans who realize that our constitution wasn't just written yesterday, and our system of government is not just a junta -- until lately. Many times I have stared at the ugly ignorant hatred of TL trolls, and realized how much I love my country more than they love theirs.
