Top Guatamalan Drug Cop Busted

Oh what a tangled they weave....

Police found five packages of cocaine and thousands of dollars in cash in the office of Guatemala's top anti-drug cop, shortly after he was lured to America and arrested on charges of conspiring to ship cocaine into the United States.

The shocking arrests of Adan Castillo and two of his deputies by U.S. officials prompted Guatemalan President Oscar Berger on Wednesday to pledge to renew anti-trafficking programs in this Central American nation that is a key transit point for drugs heading north.

According to a U.S. official, the FBI lured the three here under the pretense of attending a drug trafficking program.

I have first hand experience with low level Guatemalan Policia de Drugas and can state w/out question that the ones I dealt with were full-on crooks. However, someone being lured away from his office to another country and then a bunch of drugs being "found" in his office, seems a little questionable to me...

Another famous cocaine smuggler was able to evade capture, even after he paraded his underwear out his open zipper, with a sh*tfaced grin, in front of horrified diplomats in 2003. This felon has been active for 30 years without capture (though rumors of his capture and subsequent escape through powerful friends abound):

gee, i'm shocked, shocked i tell you! that a south american law enforcement official has been found to be in cahoots with drug lords is just mind bending.................not! our approach, such as it is, has been kind of ass backwards: it starts from the premise that the government & law enforcement agencies of these countries are all honest and incorrupt. bad premise, expectable results. a more realistic approach would be to assume the worst case scenario: they're all corrupt, and in league with the drug cartels, until proven otherwise. i realize that sounds harsh but, given their history, entirely reasonable, i think.

I'm not surprised; Guatemala was version 1.0 of US regime change tactics and left with very little in the way of democracy afterwards and even less governmental infrastructure.
