Report: Cheney Out of Loop on National Security

The right wing news site Insight reports through anonymous sources that Bush has relieved Cheney of national security duties. It would be great news, if true, but given the source, I'm suspect. [Via Raw Story.]

This paragraph is the most intriguing:

Mr. Bush is not expected to replace Mr. Cheney unless the vice president follows the fate of his former chief of staff. The sources also said Mr. Rumsfeld is expected to remain in his post until U.S. troops are withdrawn from Iraq.

Is Cheney really in jeopardy from Fitz's investigation?

The sources said Mr. Bush has privately blamed Mr. Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
Yeah, couldn't be Georgie's fault. On the other hand this story could be a fabrication for reasons unknown as yet.

Well, right now, the only thing standing between Cheney and his own personal indictment (assuming he's actually got dirt on his hands - ha! I crack myself up!) is Scooter Libby. If Cheney is really The Source in the Plame affair, only Libby (or possibly Rove) falling on their sword, going to prison, and hoping for a pardon can keep his bald, misshapen head off the chopping block...

    that Bush has relieved Cheney
No seriously...who gave Bush the authority to relieve Cheney of anything?

If Cheney did go down because of the investigation, it would be a boon for the GOP. Then a new VP would have to be selected, and he would become the automatic front-runner in 2008. This would give the rank and file someone to rally around, and stop much of the political bloodshed the primary is shaping up to be. What's the old saying, be careful what you ask for because you may get it?

Umm, not sure about your reasoning there, BigTex. There is historical precedent for such a situation, albeit not identical. Two words: Gerald Ford. If the sitting vice president "goes down" (love the potential double use of that phrase) for criminal activity, it'll be disastrous for the party in power, regardless of who is appointed to replace him.
