Golden Globes Start Now

Politics will have to wait for a few hours. The Golden Globes begin now. You can live blog in the comments if you wish -- feel free to disagree with my snarky comments.

I like the Globes better than the Oscars because they include both movies and television.

The nominees and winners in real time are here. I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, but I saw The Constant Gardener on dvd last night and thought it was excellent.

The gowns are a huge part of the event. They are always fabulous or terrible. Tonight: Sarah Jessica Parker looks great in her tight black gown. Ditto Nicolette Sheridan in a simple but beautiful blue-- and she's with Michael Bolton, I thought they broke up years ago.

To be continued below the fold.

Mariah Carey blew it with a very unclassy dress. Johnny Depp bucks the trend with an open red shirt and no tie.

Whoops, Gena Davis overdid it with brassy red -- she should have dressed like her character in Commander in Chief.

Renee Zellweger: a winner

Penelope Cruz, her face looks goregous, her dress is just okay.

Update: First Winners:

  • Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture: George Clooney, Syriana
He thanks Jack Abramoff for being the first one to get the ball rolling
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener
  • Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie: Paul Newman, Empire Falls
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie: Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy
  • Best Actress in a Drama Series: Geena Davis, Commander in Chief
Bad dress, but great speech. She totally deserves this award.
  • Best Actor in a Drama Series: Hugh Laurie, House

Worst dress so far: Drew Barrymore. She forgot her bra and if you didn't see her head, you would think she was 70 years old. (trying to be delicate here, I really like her acting.) Addition: Ann Althouse agrees: "Drew Barrymore comes out in horrendous green with shockingly pendulous breasts"

Pamela Anderson's dress: awful

Next set of winners:

  • Best Miniseries or TV Movie, Empire Falls
  • Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series: Steve Carell, The Office
  • Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy: Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
  • Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series: Mary Louise Parker, Weeds
  • Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie: Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Elvis
  • Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie: S. Epatha Merkerson, Lackawanna Blues
  • Best Screenplay: Larry McMurty and Dianna Osanna, Brokeback Mountain
  • Best Musical or Comedy TV Series: Desperate Housewives
  • Best Foreign Language Film: Paradise Now (Palestine)

The show went kind of downhill from here.

Gwynth Paltrow didn't look so hot, she needs to stop wearing beigey pink dresses that have the same color as her skin. He bra-strap was hanging down her arm during the first part of her tribute to Anthony Hopkins - while they showed a clip, she fixed it.

John Travolta made a very sexist comment thanking the male actors for outstanding work this year - what's up with that?

Now the show gets back on track.

Brokeback Mountain wins movie of the year. Congrats, Ang Lee.

The big winner of the night though is Walk the Line. Reese Witherspoon, Joaquin Phoenix and Best Musical. James Keach gave a moving speech.

I think Mel Brooks may be up for "The Producers". If so, I hope he wins. It's a brilliant story. The cast of the original movie version (not sure if they were all in the broadway version)was some of the best casting ever done. I miss Dick Shawn. He was hip baby.

Worst dress so far: Drew Barrymore. She forgot her bra and if you didn't see her head, you would think she was 70 years old. This is funny beyond words. As a guy, this stuff strikes me as just comical. Sorry to laugh at your commentary JM, but I find the idea of a running commentary on actress' outfits is....well...just not what I expected, and therefore funny. Thanks for the chuckle, for a change.

My favorite moments so far... S. Epatha Merkerson talking about getting her first leading role in her 50s. Ryan Phillippe yelling out stuff while Joaquin Phoenix was accepting for 'Walk the Line'. Inside voices please, Ryan. Almost everyone ignoring the no name cuties who are hired to escort you off stage. Manners go along way, people. More cheers to S. Epatha Merkerson for actually walking off stage with the escort. John Travolta thanking all the men for raising the bar in cating. Women are also actors, Barbarino. You can interact with them in films. Uconn womping Syracuse in the first half in the Carrier Dome allowing me to spend more time watching this goofy show.
