Feingold to Hold Live Web Chat

Tomorrow, at 10:30 am ET, Sen. Russ Feingold will hold a live text chat.

Senator Russ Feingold brings a "text chat" version of his trademark listening sessions to the World Wide Web on March 10, at 10:30 AM Eastern. The live, online session will be open to anyone with access to the Internet and a desire to ask questions of Senator Feingold live, in an online computer text chat session.

Sen. Feingold is still unhappy about the passage of the Patriot Act renewal legislation. From his statement today (received by e-mail):

As the President signs this deeply flawed Patriot Act reauthorization into law, I will redouble my efforts to bring back the safeguards that the entire Senate agreed to last summer and enact the further safeguards contained in the bipartisan SAFE Act. This effort is already underway with Senator Specter's introduction of a bill based on the amendments I was prohibited from offering during Senate debate on the Patriot Act last week. Over the past four years, we have seen a remarkable national grassroots effort to fix the Patriot Act, and I will continue to support that effort as we work to defeat terrorists while also preserving the freedom and liberty that define us as a nation."

Next time you want to fawn over Feingold, ask him what he thinks about H.R. 1606. He and his anti free speech allies (McCain, Meehan, Shays) want to silence any and all political speech unless it comes from a few "approved" media sources.

    Care to elaborate?

I would think that it's obvious. feingold is one of the anti first amendment crowd who pushed campaign finance "reform" on us. He (and the rest of them) are now trying to close down the 527 groups - they dislike freewheeling political discussion wherever they see it. Which brings us to the internet - blogs, general website, online magazines, etc. HR 1606 would free online publications from FEC oversight. It would still forbid corporate or union backing of such websites, but it would allow independent voices - like TL - to continue to publish without fear that their posts at election time would get classified as an "in kind" contribution. Which is why I suggest that someone ask Feingold about HR 1606. If he doesn't like it, then you can only conclude that he wants to shut down freewheeling political speech - like that seen at Kos, TL, Redstate, and Instapundit (etc, etc).

Yeah, I know that. I just think it's hysterical to hear you give your spin on it. It doesn't take that long to clean up the black coffee I spit on the monitor in hysterical laughter and there's no better way to start the day. "Money doesn't talk, it swears" Bob Dylan '65 Money isn't speech, it's property. It's certainly not treated as speech come tax time. It's certainly not treated as speech in ones will as you jokers never fail to remind us with this "death tax" drivel of yours. Ya can't have it both ways. Make up your mind. Ya don't get to vote 750 times because you feel strongly about the issues. Not unless you're a friend of Jeb's or Mr Blackwell's, that is.

charliedontsurf1 You miss my point, entirely. If 1606 (or something like it) isn't passed, it is very likely that the FEC will eventually rule that websites that advocate for a specific candidate are giving "in kind" contributions. You may dismiss CFR as simply trying to get money out of politics (a silly idea on its face - so long as there are goodies for Congress to bestow, there's going to be a reason to spend money) - but CFR applied to the web would neuter all of the political voices on the net. My question is, does Feingold care? I very much doubt it. He's on a "crusade" to cleanse politics, and if it hurts a few websites along the way, I doubt he'll care.

I would like to know why he voted to impeach Clinton, and why he voted to approve Asscroft as AG?
