Progress in Iraq?

by TChris

President Bush is confident that progress is being made in Iraq, although -- as the headline of this story suggests -- "explaining where is difficult."

No kidding:

About 100 masked gunmen stormed a jail near the Iranian border at dawn Tuesday - cutting phone wires, firing rocket-propelled grenades and killing 20 security men - in an operation that freed 18 fellow insurgents who had been captured in police raids just two days earlier.

Also, check out the two most recent posts on Chris Albritton's Back to Iraq website. Sobering to say the least. And Albrittion is a pretty level-headed guy, whose views have evolved much during his years of experience there.

Boy, Helen Thomas handed Shrub his head at his Press Conference today. Chalk one up for the good guys and the geezers. Progress for whom and defined by whom?

For those who have wondered how long our committment in Iraq is going to be, according to Bush, the decision to withdraw will be up to future Presidents. Let me ask a simple question to those of you who support our occupation of Iraq. Given the sharp drop in public support after only three years, how is our occupation going to be sustained for 10 more years (and maybe even more than that according to Bush)? After 3 years, over 2300 Americans killed, 16,000 wounded, hundreds of billions spent including 8 billion unaccounted for, how much closer are we to defeating the insurgents?

George W. Bush has lost touch with reality. He says he has a plan for victory? Question #1: What is the plan? and, Question #2: What is victory?

What stuck me today about the press conference was that Bush kept saying "why" we needed "win" a victory, but never did he hint as to "how" we could win. He also said that future presidents would have to worry about the deficit too. I guess the buck never stops with Bush!!!!!!!

charlie, I was going to ask you how Helen Thomas handed Bush his head but I found the exchange in talkingpointsmemo. Josh Marshall points out from this exchange with Thomas that Bush resorted to another lie to justify his unprovoked invasion of Iraq (Is anyone keeping count anymore? Doesn't the mainstream media factcheck Bush?). Per Bush "...And when he chose to deny inspectors, when he chose not to disclose, then I had the difficult decision to make to remove him." Of course, in the reality based world Saddam allowed the UN inspectors in.

On the third year anniversary of the Iraq war, President Bush blamed his Iraq war woes and standing in the polls on reality. Below are key excerpts from Mr. Bush's address. "The American people need to stop paying attention to all this ridiculous focus on reality and put their faith back into my hair brained schemes." More...

Last week, Iraq Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said in a BBC interview and in other interviews that "it is unfortunate that we are in a civil war." He added, "we are losing each day, as an average, 50 to 60 people through the country, if not more." As David Sanger of the New York Times reported, Allawi said "if this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is." --Steve Clemons, TWN

Yes, NO doubt bush has lost contact with reality, if he was ever in such contact. I can only think of Mencken when I wonder how anyone could have voted for him: "As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

    K. Ash: the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron Well, I guess they've got their wish for the time being, don't they? Unfortunately it is a false gift. And like any criminal enterprise it is one that can only grow by stealing more and more, or like any infectious disease that spreads by viral or bacterial replication, it can destroy it's host body (the country) if not stopped.

Is Tony Blair also out of touch with reality? Is the military out of touch with reality? I will side with Bush, Blair and our military over Helen Thomas, John Murtha, David Gregory and the MSM every time. Blair
