Bush Approval Sinks to 31%

Bush's ship is sinking into the ocean. He's fallen so far, The New York Times reports he may not be able to reverse the damage. He continues to lose support among his base as well as Democrats and Independents. According to the new CBS-New York Times poll,

Mr. Bush's approval rating for his management of foreign policy, Iraq and the economy have fallen to the lowest levels of his presidency.

....Mr. Bush's overall job approval rating hit another new low, 31 percent, tying the low point of his father, George H. W. Bush, in July 1992, four months before the elder Mr. Bush lost his bid for a second term to Bill Clinton. That is the third lowest approval rating of any president in 50 years; only Richard M. Nixon and Jimmy Carter were viewed less favorably.

There's also good news for Democrats:

Americans said that Democrats would do a better job dealing with Iraq, gas prices, immigration, taxes, prescription drug and civil liberties. Fifty percent said Democrats come closer than Republicans in sharing their moral values. A majority said Republican members of Congress were more likely to be financially corrupt than a Democratic member of Congress, suggesting that Democrats might be making headway in their efforts to portray Republicans as having created a "culture of corruption" in Washington.

By a margin of better than two to one, Democrats were seen as having more new ideas than Republicans. And half of respondents, the highest yet, said it was better when different parties control the two branches of government, reflecting one of the major arguments being laid out by Congressional Democrats in their bid to win back the House or Senate.

A few more Republican indictments in the next few months should make things even better.

Does this mean that, sometime between now and the first Tuesday in November, the Homeland Dept will raise the terror alert level a notch or two? Good reasons, I suppose, would be: 1) bin Laden is on the loose; 2) Zarqawi is on the loose; 3) a whole bunch of others are on the loose; 4) people near LA produce "obscenity" and distribute it on the Net; 5) sexual predators communicate with minors in chat rooms; 6) unpatriotic reporters receive and publish state secrets; . . .

FWIW, it's likely we'll see a poll rsult under 30% soon, if only because of the margin of error. Josh Marshall has a nice post on this issue. The NYT poll you referenced has a 3% MOE - W could already be below 30%.

Raulduke, merci. But then; "The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on; it is never any use to oneself" And say I might; "The public is wonderfully tolerant. It forgives everything except genius" But let us not forget; "Most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes." And given the time zone from which I post it can only be said that; "Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast" For it must be said; "I am not young enough to know everything." And of myself; "I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying."

It is and always will be the problem with fear based management, people will cower for a while, but when they start coming out saying "enough is enough" more follow suit and the damage is irreversible. Which is why their foreign policy sucks also.

Edger, which is why the mega-churches were created to preach a gospel of forgiveness and a loving god to grow the ministries. Most of the large churches do not do "fire and brimstone" because it keeps people away, and the coffers go empty. Some of the christians have recognized the problem and worked around it, many still have not.

as for the animal-human hybrids, that reminds me. What about the Greys and the aliens from the Pleiades star constellation? Aren't they are good reason for elevating the terror alert level? Don't they deserve to have us somewhere higher than where we are, which is, well, I forget . . . how about at least orange? Or, maybe the Greys should get an elevated terror alert level and then later the ones from the Pleiades, maybe, a few weeks before the election. And, since we are not quite sure if they exist, we'll call the whole thing top secret.

BB, The San Diego War Memorial Cross? Come on, the courts have decided this one, it needs to come down from public land and the public memorial. Establishment clause and all. I'd have no problem with it up there if they included equally large symbols from every other represented religion in the armed forces.

the left doesn't poll bush every week, polling firms do. They did it when he read 'My Pet Goat', when he stood on the rubble and lied about supporting firefighters, when he wore a flight suit that he wasn't entitled to while proclaiming 'mission accomplished', when he campaigned while New Orleans drowned and they do it today and they'll do it tomorrow. They also did it to clinton, when he got a bj, when he lowered unemployment, when rethugs lied about him having people killed, when he got a bj, when he created jobs, when he got a bj, when starr went on an $80Mil witch hunt, and they're still doing it today and they'll do it tomorrow. It's what they do, don't blame the messenger.
