Jersey City Mayor Alleges Police Abused Him

by TChris

The police say
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy "approached the scene and involved himself in the investigation" of a couple who were arguing outside a bar owned by Healy's sister.

Officers warned Mr. Healy that his involvement would get him arrested, but he repeatedly intervened, according to the statement. He was handcuffed, taken to police headquarters and charged with one count each of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, the statement said.

Why would Healy interfere with a police investigation? His account of the eventful evening differs sharply from the police report.

The mayor said that around 1:50 a.m. he and his wife left the bar to walk home. He saw a young man standing on top of a car, yelling at a young woman on the sidewalk.

"I said, do yourself a favor, get off the car," Healy said. "The Bradley Beach police are probably coming, and they don't play around."

As the man quieted down, five police cars arrived -- including a car each from Avon and Neptune -- and police went after the girl, Healy said. The mayor said he stepped in to tell the officer the young man was more at fault.

Healy showed reporters "wounds above his eyes, and on his ear, wrists and leg -- the result of his being thrown face first to the pavement and being handcuffed."

Healy's wife, Maureen, said officer Terry Browning used his knee to hold her husband's neck to the ground. Browning asked another officer for Mace and then sprayed her husband in the left eye before walking around his prostrate body to spray him in the right eye, she said.

Maureen Healy, 54, held up her right hand to show a bruised and swollen middle finger, and extended a scraped right ankle. She said the injuries occurred when police pushed her to the ground, threatening to handcuff her, after she tried to hand her husband his glasses, which had flown off during the arrest.

Healy says he'll seek criminal charges against the abusive officers. Good luck with that, Mr. Mayor.

There's never a dull moment in Jersey City, especially where their politics and politicians are involved. But, more to the point, Mayor Healy may have a point here. the Jersey Journal (JCNJ's own tabloid) has two articles on it- the cops' side and the Mayor's. Key point: Healy has an uninvolved attorney-as-witness who will back up his version. Why was Healy at a bar in Bradley Beach (about 70 miles from JC)? It's his sister's bar, and they had retired to her bar after being to the State Police Academy for a niece's graduation there. The SP Academy is in Sea Girt, relatively close to Bradley Beach. Interestingly, the local paper has the AP press release on it, and posted it under "strange news" on its website, right above the deer break-in and goats eating weeds. But they came around and put it under news. Yes, Bradley Beach cops are rough on out-of-towners, but that goes for all the Shore towns. It's the Way of The Jersey Shore and, frankly, it's the only way things stay modestly under control in the summer. Not to say it's a zoo, but there is always some craziness going on and the police respond aggressively.

He probably tried to help just before the police arrived. Given that they were shouting (the gf and bf) he may not have turned around to see the police before he was assaulted/manhanded/whatever. I've been at scenes like this and it's very easy not to realize the cops have arrived. Of course it's dependent on the size of the crowd, where the officers parked, etc. Specifically, if they parked farther away he may not have seen the lights (if they were on) and confused the police officers background noise as other bystanders trying to help. That said, he should have called the cops to begin with. It's never a good idea to get involved in a domestic dispute like that - you'll end up dead if you do it frequently enough. Granted he's a mayor whose job it is to help people so I can understand that.

Anyone who has ever dealt with the police at the Jersey Shore knows that in many instances they act like thugs. Many of them are not full time police officers and their sole goal is to maximize the amount of tickets they can write so the townships can make money off of the summer people. That being said it's likely that the mayor contributed to this situation, he was most likely ineberiated and should have simply minded his own business. His alcohol abuse was an issue in the recent campaign for mayor.

Scribe - Sounds like what may have happened with the Marines... Based on your excusing the actions, I am sure you will agree.

yes, exactly, soldiers running wild and executing innocent civilians in their homes is exactly like NJ cops beating up a citizen. (coughdumba$$cough)

Well, let's see. You train some personell to take control of any given situation using force, pump them up with ego-inflating propaganda, arm them with weapons, tell them they are the ultimate authority, and set them loose. They end up abusing some defenseless humans. This clearly only describes one of the two groups.
