Another Saddam Defense Lawyer Kidnapped, Killed

Khamis al-Obeidi, one of the main defense lawyers for Saddam Hussein, was kidnapped from home by men in uniforms and killed. He is the third defense lawyer on the team to be killed in 8 months.

Khalil al-Dulaimi, Saddam's chief attorney, blamed the Interior Ministry.

Al-Dulaimi blamed the Interior Ministry, which Sunnis have alleged is infiltrated by so-called Shiite death squads, for the killing. "We strongly condemn this act and we condemn the killings done by the Interior Ministry forces against Iraqis," he said.

The Interior Ministry had no comment on the claim. A photo of al-Obeidi provided by police showed his face, head and shoulders drenched in blood

I'm so confused. Why is Saddam given a lawyer? For that matter, why is he even "on trial"??? Everyone--and I mean EVERYONE--knows he's going to be executed. Evidence, lawyers, judges, trial misconduct, dead lawyers all be dammed. There isn't, and never was, ANY chance that he wouldn't be sentenced to death. So why even go through these motions? Set his execution date--here's betting it's Nov. 3 or 4, 2006--and get on with it.

You know, like with my wife and headaches, the real news is when one of his lawyers ISN'T killed. What a job. I'd rather juggle giant razor blades. At least you might get some tips in the ol' jar and sympathy before you head to the emergency room for stitches.

For crying out loud, how many lawyers have to be murdered for this farce to be brought to an end? On the bright side, at least Saddam isn't being tried in some sovereignty-stomping international court staffed by, say Dutch people, and lacking the death penalty. Now THAT would be a real problem.

I guess not everyone is entitled to a fair trial by one's peers. Hell's Bells let us be just like Saddam Hussein and just blow him away....nah let's lynch him in tha tried and true American way.

I guess not everyone is entitled to a fair trial by one's peers. Show me any peers. There's no jury here. There's no attempt at judicial fairness going on. Why? Because the US has predetermined he's guilty and will hang. This "trial" is a textbook definition of "dog and pony show". Please no offense, but you're either obtuse or intentionally argumentative if you really think these judges could ever rule this man "innocent", or even "5 to 10". To pretend that Saddam might get ANYTHING but death is ignoring the obvious. Funny thing is...when he's sentenced, the media will act all fake-surprised.

Yes the US government would be caught out. We installed the guy after all. An international trial would cover all his crimes against humanity, instead of the select single smallish massacre that he will hang for in Itaq. America would be exposed as his longtime collaborater.
While many have thought that Saddam first became involved with U.S. intelligence agencies at the start of the September 1980 Iran-Iraq war, his first contacts with U.S. officials date back to 1959, when he was part of a CIA-authorized six-man squad tasked with assassinating then Iraqi Prime Minister Gen. Abd al-Karim Qasim. In July 1958, Qasim had overthrown the Iraqi monarchy in what one former U.S. diplomat, who asked not to be identified, described as "a horrible orgy of bloodshed."...... .....Little attention was paid to Qasim's bloody and conspiratorial regime until his sudden decision to withdraw from the [anti-Soviet Baghdad] pact in 1959, an act that "freaked everybody out" according to a former senior U.S. State Department official.

I hope that Bush and Cheney get the same kind of justice for the people they killed for their lies.

Narius, I said justice, not death, which seems to be your answer for everything. Don't put words in people's mouths. I don't need to see The DP applied. I'd be happy just to see them on trial. You must be in high school. Your a bit late on "pulling out now". Is there a Plan B for RWNJ's?

Narius, I thought your lot wanted to bring democracy and freedom to the Middle East. Or was there another memo after that one that I missed?

Narius, That is the perfect recipe for circuitous logic. Congrats.
