Lieberman Calls In Reinforcements

Sens. Joe Biden, Barbara Boxer and Ken Salazar are headed to CT to help Joe Lieberman in his primary battle against Ned Lamont.

Check out what Jane of Firedoglake has been doing in CT to oppose him, along with a group of dedicated local bloggers and Lamont staffers. Some prime quotes from Jane:

"It's all about [Supreme Court Justice Samuel] Alito for me," she said, referring to Lieberman's vote to prevent a filibuster and allow the right-wing judge's confirmation to proceed. "We're this close" -- she took her hand off the wheel to demonstrate just how close with two fingers -- "to having another judge who will seal our fate for the next 20 years. We can wind up permanently stacked and unable to swing the pendulum back.

"This is a fight for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party," she said, the state police headquarters passing in a blur outside her window. "Are we going to rubber-stamp judges like Alito? Or are we going to say that Republican Lite isn't good enough?"

You go, Jane, we're all following and cheering for you -- and Lamont.

Josh Marshall posts a pathetic letter from Lieberman whining about why he will dump the Dems if they vote Lamont in the primary. What a piece of puke.

Biden, Boxer, and Salazar and their rescure operation on behalf of Lieberman show why we need new generation of leadership in the progressive democratic movement. These have become oligarchs peddling their senatorial privilege, and presenting a caricature of what real political leadership is.

Wow, how many PBR's did you drink before you posted that? And how can you drink that nasty stuff anyway. Did your job get outsourced and that is all you can afford?

I still believe Lieberman's servility to the administration is about Zionism, and that he is putting it ahead of his country, his party and the lives of tens of thousands of severely suffering humans. I'm appalled that these senators are going to support him.

"It's all about [Supreme Court Justice Samuel] Alito for me," This sounds disturbingly like those on the right talking about the threat of liberal justices. But then most one-issue extremists do tend to sound the same.

Why is the left so afraid of Justice Alito?

What I find most interesting is that by raising the filibuster issue Jane is demonstrating (again) that the Left doesn't want to debate the issues and accept the will of the people. I think it is called "democracy."

If you think the Supreme Court is a "single issue" consideration for a voter, you are not sufficiently informed about either law or the Supreme Court to be speaking on the issue. It's not much less silly than arguing that being concerned about who the President is makes you a "single issue voter". Do you think Roe v, Wade, Brown v. Board of Education, Kelo v. New London, Bowers v Hardwick, Hudson v. Michigan, Gonzales v Raich, and Hamdi v Rumsfeld all represent a single issue? As for whether Lieberman gets endorsed by other senators in the primary, well... that's how the system works, and that's how it's supposed to work. People are similarly free to debate whether or not a candidate deserves an endorsement.

I have no dog in the Connecticut fight, but I think it's an interesting study in hypocrisy. Jane, God bless her (I like her opinions much of the time,) has heaped a lot of criticism on people who won't pledge beforehand to support the party's nominee no matter who wins. That pledge is important to get up front because it assumes, of course, that Lamont is going to win. I wonder if Jane is prepared to make that same pledge herself? Will she pledge up front to support the party's nominee no matter who it is? Once the people have spoken, if Lieberman wins the party's nomination, will she support him?

rdandrea - Based on the temperature of the debate I would have to say it is highly doubtful. Aaron - Actually the selection of the judges is an expression of democracy because the people actually vote for the Senators. Remember that the filibuster is not in the Constitution, has had its rules changed several times and has been used for what I think you would consider bad purposes several times. Evidently the fact that Lieberman voted against Alito means nothing. He was expected to help shut down the democratic process and frustrate the will of the people. As has been said before, the best thing the Repubs have going for them is that they are running against Demos..... who are increasingly being seen as controlled by the far Left.

Seen by who? You are so far to the right you can't see the far left.

Jim, perhaps you haven't read the Constitution. Perhaps you don't even know what it is. But the Constitution indicates that the President nominates a candidate, subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. Contrary to your apparent belief, Senators do not pick a prospective Justice, nor are they obliged to approve every nominee who comes before them. Even if the rules were further modified, or the Republicans implemented their "nuclear option", that would remain the case. Did you somehow miss the Harriet Miers fiasco? Shot down by her own party before her nomination even came to a vote? As for whether the filibuster has been used for what I (but not you?) would deem bad purposes, so what? Bad laws have passed and bad nominees have been approved despite the potential for a filibuster - does that, to you, mean we need to strengthen it? Or does your head explode when you have to reconcile those facts with your present knee-jerking against it.
