Ex-Bush Aide Claude Allen to Plead Guilty

Claude Allen, President Bush's top domestic policy advisor until he resigned in February, then accused in March of a theft by returning receipts sfor refunds cheme at Target and Hechts, will plead guilty to a misdemeanor in exchange for having felony charges dismissed and receiving no jail time.

Allen was arrested after Montgomery police accused him of stealing more than $5,000 in merchandise from Target and Hecht's stores through a refund scheme. Police said this is how the scheme worked: Allen would walk into a store, pick up items and pay for them. He would later return to the store, pick up identical items and seek a refund using the receipt from the purchase. Police said he did this at least 25 times from October to January, buying items including a Bose home theater system, clothes and merchandise worth as little as $2.50. Several of the transactions were recorded by store surveillance cameras.

As part of the deal, Allen will pay $850.00 in restitution. Background here and here.

Pretty minor stuff; buying a pardon wouldn't even be worth it.

Allen will pay $850.00 in restitution.

As much as I generally dislike the Bush administration and those who make it work, this was not a rational Republican crime. This was a cry for help. I'd be willing to bet good money that Claude Allen is suffering from depression. He didn't steal anything that someone with his income would normally consider worth having. The first thing I would try to find out is if he had any social network of close confidents he could talk to about personal problems he was having. For an unmarried Black guy in a Republican administrtion, in a totally time-consuming job as such White House posts tend to be, surrounded by White Republicans who generally have either disdain for Blacks or an inability to relate to them personally, my bet is that he had no one to talk to. He was there because he felt that as a Black Republican he had reached the pinnacle of success. It's just that it didn't feel like it. All in all, I hope he gets some help with finding what his personal problem really was/is, and rather than taking this as a total personal disaster he uses it to direct him to find out what he personally really needs. Again, my bet, he was looking for socially recognized success, and he got it. Then he found it didn't satisfy what he personally needed. Now he needs to find what he personally needs. That's long term. I alos hope someone is prescribing anti-depressants to help him get that far personally. But this post is neither political nor legal. What he did was similarly not political, and the legal system isn't that good at dealing with mental health needs. I just hope that he gets the guidance he needs.

Oh please, Rick B. I'm very sorry, but that is cr*p! The guy is a bleedin disgrace to his family, friends, church and race. An above-average intelligent person would know that there was no way to square being a black man (true to oneself) and working for the likes of Helms (Johnnie Cochran explained this in his auto-biography). He obviously had inner demons; but whose fault was that? I don't feel sorry for him at all; although it's always a shame to see a black man having struggled to reach the top, fall so disgracefully - given that very few of them manage to attain that height in the first place. Oh well...what's next?

Actually, I think it is more accurate to say that the state's attorney will not ASK for jail time, since the judge won't be bound by the state's recommendation. Allen got a pretty sweet deal from the SAO. I'm not sure they would normally drop the felony charges, but I think it is probably a good thing. The state's attorney in this case is a Democrat who is running for Attorney General, so I don't think there is any danger of a political deal. Let's see how the judge handles it. I work in this county -- they sometimes have their own ideas of how cases should be resolved.
