Things to Think About

by TChris

He didn't say what "victory" in Iraq will look like. Given that most of the Iraqi deaths over the past several months have been the result of sectarian conflict, would "victory" require U.S. troops to intervene in a civil war? Nor did the president say how the Iraqi enterprise prevents terrorist plots such as the recently disrupted plan to blow up airliners.

This is the time for Mr. Bush to acknowledge serious errors, present evidence that he has learned from them, define clear goals and set a strategy for accomplishing them. Time is short.

The California law isn't a great one, and it may actually be devestating to the environmental movement. I'm all for reducing pollution, but if we do it simply by legislative fiat we'll gut the economy (which isn't politically sustainable even if it may be morally right) and may just shift the pollution emission elsewhere. California already has a wonky economy, especially it the energy sector. Look for more employers to flee the state, and also for the the return of roaming blackouts.

(hit post too soon) ...which means high cost, low benefit. Makes the next attempt -- even if it's a good idea -- harder to sell to the public.

I hope everyone reads the Cynthia Tucker article that TL links to about Bush being in denial about the war in Iraq. In my opinion, Bush is an unsystematic thinker. In systems design, analysis leads to planning which leads to design/development and implementation. In Iraq, poor analysis has lead to poor planning and design which has resulted in problems with implementation. Bush is also an unsystematic thinker in the way he has ignored and continues to ignore feedback, especially negative feedback. Finally Bush is an unsystematic thinker in that he does not have a clearly defined goal for what he wants to accomplish in Iraq.

It's great when environmental issues reach any politician's aganda. However, the cynic in me recognises that when such ideas are exalted publicly, they rarely come from the heart. Rather it's just another way of showing the voting masses how compassionate, caring and forward-thinking they are. The disparity in what Schwarzenegger says and the types of vehicles he chooses to run demonstrates just how important the environment really is to him.

Roy, There is no dream scenario for changing our addiction to poisoning our children with pollution. We just have to do it. If "business" is too short-sighted to see the long-term benefit (healthier, longer living customers and employees) then one can only conclude that "business" is not in the business of putting the needs of the American People first. Then the state needs to work harder at helping those whom business will abandon so they can poison more. Is that really a difficult concept to grasp? In short, we'll all need to be more generous, more sharing, and consume much less than we currently waste.

HK, Well, there is an election coming up. But even I will give Arnie credit. He's doing a better job than I would have predicted. I think he will get re-elected. Personally, I'm on the fence as to whether to vote at all.
