Blair to Leave Office

by TChris

You'll have a year to bid farewell to Tony Blair, whose popularity plummeted because of his cozy relationship with President Bush and his support for the war in Iraq.

He became a close ally of President Bush first in Afghanistan then in Iraq -- a war that was deeply unpopular among many Britons, including Muslims who argued that the vision of British troops fighting in Islamic countries as allies of the United States exposed the country to terrorist attack. His handling of the Iraq invasion, moreover, cost him the trust of many Britons.

Blair will cede his position as prime minister to his finance minister, Gordon Brown, "some time around or before next summer."

So he'll be around for the next year. plenty of time to help Bush spread war throughout the ME with associated blowback here in the US and UK.

He'll be gone long before that. He's lost control of his succession, and the knives are out. If I placed bets (I don't) I'd place one he's no longer in office by Thanksgiving, and that's being generous. W's just pulled the rug out from under him re Ghost Air and secret torture prisons, and Tony'll take a brutal hit during the next Question Time. Look for Brit media to go back, for more commentary and info, to their former (sacked) ambassador to Uzbekistan, who wrote about how there was torture used there and how the Brits could not afford to sell their souls for that. That's why he lost his job. And, remember, the High Court in the UK dealt some serious body blows on torture in judicial decisions earlier this year - how it was unconstitutional and illegal under Brit and EU law for the UK to even come near to it. Tony's credibility in denying the UK involvement with the CIA's Ghost Air and Torture Gulag is toast and, with his credibility goes his job.

When we were there in May some of the Brits said that as soon as Blair steps down they will pull out of Iraq. They also felt we had dumped the mess in Afganistan in their lap and they were plenty annoyed about that. Now they have taken some losses they no doubt are getting angry with Tony. Some of the comments made by folks who resigned were very negative. I wonder if Blair will be around at the end of 2006.

the term "blowback" also tends to involve those doing the killing of any responsibility for their actions, a favorite amoral position taken by the left-after all, those third worlders can't be responsible for their actions, it must be our fault.
I assume you mean absolve But your wrong, no morality statement is implied, rather a simple prediction but thanks for another straw man. But to think that the US can continue its aggression without a response is naive at best and completely hypocritical

Good riddance to lying rubbish. He wants to hang around another year, but I think he'll be forced out by Christmas or sooner. Most of his party wants him gone YESTERDAY, since he is a huge albatross around their necks. He should be told to get out in 45 minutes, the same amount of time that he said would take Saddam to nuke the UK. Ta Ta Phony Tony...don't let the fake WMD hit you on the way out.
