Nightline on the Search for Bin Laden

Following it's fictionalized version of The Path to 9/11, ABC's Nightline has a ten minute special on the Hunt for bin Laden, says it has new evidence on the hunt.

It reports that two months before the Africa Embassy bombings, there was a plan to arrest bin Laden, anesthetize him and take him to the U.S. George Tenet, according to ABC, pulled the plug on the operation. Richard Clarke says the plan wouldn't work.

Nightline further says President Clinton authorized three aborted attacks on Afghanistan. There was also a plan to bomb the al Qaeda training camps. George Tenet killed the plans saying that his CIA Afghan source wasn't reliable enough. Khandahar in 1999 was the best chance to get bin Laden. There have been no sightings of bin Laden since the 2001 attacks.

Terry Moran reports from Afhanistan and says the Taliban is re-gaining power at an alarming rate. The fighting is fierce.

Tommorrow is a time for meditation and reflection. Put a candle in the window, and/or say a prayer in whatever language or religion that suits you. I will go about doing my work that supports this insanity and hold my tongue to honor those who died who may not agree with my vision of the world. But on 9/12 I will be back with a vengence, brimming with rage at the architects of so much death, on both sides, from the Mullahs to the Monarchs, and the mindless automatons who follow them to destruction. We are smarter than this. Peace

But doesn't, at least based on what I saw.

clearly there are people that don't want the 9/11 motives known. ABC's movie just lied saying that bin laden said the attacks would continue "until you convert to Islam" this movie is very ugly propaganda what bin Laden has said has been crystal clear. "We swore that America wouldn't live in security until we live it truly in Palestine. This showed the reality of America, which puts Israel's interest above its own people's interest. America won't get out of this crisis until it gets out of the Arabian Peninsula, and until it stops its support of Israel." -Osama bin Laden, October 2001 "... the Mujahideen saw the black gang of thugs in the White House hiding the truth, and their stupid and foolish leader, who is elected and supported by his people, denying reality and proclaiming that we (the Mujahideen) were striking them because we were jealous of them (the Americans), whereas the reality is that we are striking them because of their evil and injustice in the whole of the Islamic World, especially in Iraq and Palestine and their occupation of the Land of the Two Holy Sanctuaries." -Osama Bin Laden , February 14 , 2003 No one should be suppressing the facts. What motivated the 9/11 hijackers? The video shows the 9/11 Commission Hearing where the question "What motivated them to do it?" was finally asked. See FBI Special Agent Fitzgerald explain the motive. This testimony was kept out of the 9/11 Commission Report and no recommendation was given to address the main motive for the 9/11 attacks. Hey, you guys and gals are a heck of a lot better than raw amateurs like Karl Rove or Lee Atwater. If Big Satan dropped its support of Little Satan today in its entirety, Big Satan would yet remain Big Satan IMO. This reeks of the usual prejudice of Jews being responsible for many of the ills of the world. Without a doubt Israel has committed some terrible atrocities and treats Palestinians like, oh say, we do illegal immigrants from Mexico. Frankly I don't particularly care what Osama bin Laden says about his motives. Why should anyone? I applaud much of what you do here but this is not one of those times I am exactly enthralled. Thank you for listening. Best, Terry

Tom Murphy - Tom, there is no need to argue about what OBL said. In March of 1997 he gave Peter Arnett, then of CNN, an interview. We have that interview. In it he was asked what would happen if we withdrew. From OBL's lips.
REPORTER: Mr. Bin Ladin, will the end of the United States' presence in Saudi Arabia, their withdrawal, will that end your call for jihad against the United States and against the US ? BIN LADIN: The cause of the reaction must be sought and the act that has triggered this reaction must be eliminated. The reaction came as a result of the US aggressive policy towards the entire Muslim world and not just towards the Arabian peninsula. So if the cause that has called for this act comes to an end, this act, in turn, will come to an end. So, the driving-away jihad against the US does not stop with its withdrawal from the Arabian peninsula, but rather it must desist from aggressive intervention against Muslims in the whole world.
That really says it all. OBL merely wants the right to have Moslems do what they want throughout the world. Since we resist, they attack with the weapon they have, which is "terrorism." That would be, as we are now seeing in Europe, Australia and other countries, the right to be governed by Sharia Law. With that comes Moslem enclaves, and the various cultural quirks that comes with it. Such as no rights for women, killing homosexuals, and honor killings of women who have "embarassed" the family. That this is unacceptable is obvious, or at least should be, to anyone claiming to a liberal. Yet it is the Right who has attacked, joined by a few, such as myself, "social" or "hard" liberals. How the Left, and the Democrats, can square their acceptance of the loss of women's rights, etc., with their supposed beliefs is a mystery that puzzles many now, and will astound historians in the future. Presently it is not being discussed because of the fear that it will offend the so-called "moderate" Moslems. This cannot be allowed. What the terrorists want should be understood by everyone, and then we can see what everyone's response is.

Jim, This is why we cant afford to lose the fight in Afghanistan, which has never been successfully held by any foreign power. To hold it, we first need to improve the transpotation system, to move troops. We also need to capture Bin Laden, for the symbolic value of showing that nobody gets away with the sh*t he has pulled. Sadly, we are bogged down in Iraq, leaving us few options in the region. We are now stuck either with "stay the course", or attacking Iran, neither is a pleasant prospect. Please remember, Iran was kept in check for decades with their war with Saddam. Now he is gone, and the Ayatollahs can do what they want. Despite this distraction, we have no choice but to hold Afghanistan, or give up being a world power.

. WTF are you talking about? "the left" and Democrats are calling for the caputuring and killing of OBl. See Howard Dean with Chris Wallace yesterday (Crooks and Liars has the video) for Dean literally speaking as the party chair. The fact that most Americans see Iraq as not advancing this goal, and not advancing protecting us and therefore do not support Bush's fiasco does not = acceptance of Sharia. This has got to be the stupidest remark I have seen you write. My apologies if this statement is violates the TL policy of not insulting posters. However, it seems to me JimakaPPJ's remarks insult every poster here who thinks Bush's policy is wrong, it insults the intelligence of readers, it insult Democrats and "the Left" (whoever the hell JimakaPPJ thinks that might be).
