Frist Attaches Detainee Bill to Border Fence Bill

A vote on the bill to build a 700 mile fence across 1/3 of the U.S. - Mexico border could come on Friday. That's because Sen. Bill Frist has attached the bill on detainee treatment to the border fence bill.

The Senate is likely to vote first on the detainee portions, and then take up the border bill.

If Democrats agree, the Senate would debate detainee treatment first and a vote on the border fence could happen Friday. Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said he believed he and Frist could work something out.

Several key Republicans remain opposed to the border bill. The Senate passed a version of it calling for 370 miles of fence, but the House didn't act on it. Instead, the House wants the Senate to pass its bill, H.R.6061.

What a colossal waste of money. Does Congress think it grows on trees? Let's forget about border bills and punitive immigration bills and enact more important legislation. Here is the Democrat's wish list:

  • The implementation of the 9/11 Commission recommendations,
  • A raise in the minimum wage,
  • Authority for he Secretary of HHS to negotiate prescription drug prices,
  • Restoration of the $12 billion in cuts to student aid and expanded access to Pell grants, and
  • A roll back of subsidies to oil companies.

To which I would add:

  • Fair treatment and access to the courts for detainees

  • so in 1 single bill, they're going to build a wall and authorize torture? are they going to name it the "Esat Germany Had It Right" Act?

Several key Republicans remain opposed to the border bill.
Several key Democrats support it. The original House bill was bipartisan to. Big congrats go to Bolten and Rove for stampeding the liberal left press into venting against "House Conservatives."
The Senate passed a version of it calling for 370 miles of fence, but the House didn't act on it.
Because they were going to be bamboozled into the Democrat/Bush Amnesty/extra worker programs. America, is it the only country in the world where the "left" is in the pocket of big money lobbies than the "right?" I think so.
What a colossal waste of money.
No, amazingly effective, as already proven in parts of California. That's why the lobbies fear it. Unlike Bush's National Guard stunt it can't be withdrawn.
Does Congress think it grows on trees?
    Yes.
Let's forget about border bills and punitive immigration bills and enact more important legislation.
It is important to tens of millions people whose wages are being depressed, and who are paying extra state and local taxes to subsidize Bush's, now the Democrats' major cash contributors. Most Americans aren't locked into upper class white liberal fears, guilt and alienation. When Senator Harry Reid explained his flip flop from his 1993 bill on immigration to the current Democratic anti-worker line did he give one explanation about his change of opinion on the wage effects. Nope, not one. He said his "immigrant" wife changed his mind he said through fashionable manly tears. You think he goes home and cries too? No, he probably takes calls from the Casino/Resort lobbyists thanking him for helping make sure maid wage rates stay at $7.00 instead of $9.00. "Here is the Democrat's wish list:" Nice, but it's not the Democrats' wish list. It's yours.

Fine with me. Both bills suck. Anyone not wearing a brown shirt and an armband should be against it. Watch, some Democrats will vote for it.

Can't have open borders and a welfare society. One or the other will have to give. I'm for this bill.

Can't have open borders and a welfare society. One or the other will have to give. Really? Tell that to the UK, whose borders are freely open to any EU citizen, including those from states with far inferior economies and prospects. There is no massive influx of people 'taking advantage' of their prodigious social welfare programs.

TK.... There is no massive influx of people 'taking advantage' of their prodigious social welfare programs. Well bully for them...unfortunately, that isn't the case here....is it? And BTW... the British borders aren't 'open' like you are suggesting. You still need permission to stay.
