Washington Times Calls for Hastert's Resignation

The conservative Washington Times is calling for House Speaker Denny Hastert's resignation.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once. Either he was grossly negligent for not taking the red flags fully into account and ordering a swift investigation, for not even remembering the order of events leading up to last week's revelations -- or he deliberately looked the other way in hopes that a brewing scandal would simply blow away. He gave phony answers Friday to the old and ever-relevant questions of what did he know and when did he know it? Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance.

The Times wants Henry Hyde, who isn't running for re-election, to take his place.

The gop is falling apart. The rot in the center is leaving it structurally unsound and it's collapsing in on itself. They've always been self-destructive. What will they try to take down with them? These people are desperate cornered rats. They'll do anything to save themselves.

Actually, I almost find myself in agreement with the piece. I too would like to know what he knew and when he knew it, and in the absence of a reasonable explanation think he should step aside voluntarily. For the good of the whole. If he can't or won't answer the question then, adios, as we now say in California. All politicians spend too much time dodging responsibility, and it's time for the voters to change that. I also think gerrymandering is a primary cause of this problem. The party in charge doesn't want it changed because they might lose seats. Well, if they are not performing they should lose seats. focusing on keeping power for power's sake gets no one anywhere. /off soapbox

Hastert apparently knew about some of Foley's inappropriate actions for what some are saying could have been as far back as three years. He should at least step down from House Speaker. Thousands of people across the nation are contacting their Representatives demanding that they call for just that - for Hastert to step down. You can contact your Rep by clicking here.
