Foley Replacement Candidate Named

Mark Foley's name will remain on the ballot in his Florida District. Republicans have agreed on a replacement candidate, state representative Joe Negron, but his name won't be on the ballot. In order to vote for Negron, voters will have to vote for "Mark Foley."

One prominent Florida Republican said he doubts that any GOP candidate can capture the seat with Foley's name on the ballot. "The only way you win is they (voters) have got to vote for Mark Foley. That doesn't appear to me to be very attractive," said Tom Slade, former state Republican Party chairman.

The Democratic candidate, Tim Mahoney, plans no changes to his campaign:

"I've done a good job talking about Tim Mahoney," he said. "When people meet me and people know me, whether they're Democrats or Republicans, they get on board. They know that when I'm in Washington, D.C., I'll be no-nonsense and it's all going to be about results."

So, you have to mark a ballot for disgraced foley to vote for Negron??? Wow, that baffles the mind. Is Florida too cheap to reprint ballots? Does anyone think that's a balanced or fair election?

I guess you could write his name in, like you have to do in Texas in delay's district.

Patrick, maybe the FL Republican party should pull a Torricelli.
Under New Jersey law, a general election candidate must withdraw at least 51 days before election day to be replaced on the ballot -- a deadline Torricelli did not meet. Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Yolanda Ciccone halted the printing of ballots in a ruling sought by the Democrats.
...despite the fact that Toricelli did not w/draw before the legally-mandated 51 days. The NJ Supremes then upheld Ciccone's decision to allow Torricelli's name to be replaced on the ballot. And his replacement, some guy named Lautenberg, won.

It's fair in that it complies with the rules they established previously. Can't go changing them now that they've become inconvenient, that would just be gaming the system. If the Foley and DeLay and other candidate changes show that these rules don't adequately serve the public, we should change the rules, but only after the next big election.

And there's no way to avoid mentioning "Mark Foley" in their ads. They might have to mention it as often as they mention Mr. Negron's name. And it's not a question of cheap; it's the way Florida's election law is written. (Not that it's carved in stone or anything....)
