Best Evidence GOP in Trouble

This:

Rove is giving a virtuoso performance designed to prevent the Democrats from taking control of the House and Senate or, if that is no longer possible, to hold down the size of the Democratic victory to make it easier for the GOP to come back in 2008.

If Rove is spinning that he is still a genius even if the GOP loses both houses of Congress, then the Republicans must really be in trouble.

    A genius to "The Base"? (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by Edger on Mon Oct 30, 2006 at 06:45:20 AM EST
Rove will spin it that way mostly for the benefit of their base. "The Base"? Maybe we should start referring to them as "Al Qaeda"? I digress, but it is kind of an apt comparison.

Anyway, msobel yesterday posted a good diary here linking to a Digby post that might, among other things, explain why Rove can do this and have their base think he is a genius:

    Back to their natural state:

I don't want any of us to think for a moment that winning and losing elections means the same thing to us as it means to them. Democrats believe in government and they want to make it work. Republicans see government purely as a means to exert power. Unfortunately, they are not very good at that because in the modern world sheer, dumb might is no longer possible. The best they can do is loot the treasury and leave the rest of their mess to be cleaned up by the Democrats.

What they really excel at is politics. Governance just hangs them up. And don't think for a moment that they will be chagrined or ashamed and crawl off into a hole to lick their wounds. Being defeated liberates them to do what they are really good at --- destroying the opposition and pushing their agenda with sophisticated, scorched earth political rhetoric. It's not natural for them to be on the defense and they don't like it. They are going back to their natural state --- victimhood and the aggressive attack.

Get ready. The Democrats will not only have to govern, but they will have to fix all the problems they've created while fighting them every step of the way. They're not going away. And they will pull out every stop to win every election, not because they necessarily want to govern but because that's how you keep score. For a long, long time they've been able to get their way whether they win or lose and they see no reason to doubt that will continue. And unless we put a stop to this they might be right.

...they will pull out every stop to win every election, not because they necessarily want to govern but because that's how you keep score.

If this sentence sounds familiar, it's because it's exactly how their trolls approach debate and discussion here. To win arguments, not to discuss issues.

These people are in trouble alright. Far more than they know. But it's all internal problems, and their interior lights are burned out. Unfortunately the rest of the world has to deal with them. Debating an infection is pointless though. Antibiotics work much better.

Karl Rove is not a magician, and there is no way he can turn around support for the gop in 7 days. One thing to watch for them trying to do is steal the midterm elections.

the n.j. supreme court ruling, with respect to equality for gay couples, was supposedly going to "galvanize" the republican "faith" base to action. it was going to wipe iraq off the tv news screens, and give fresh red meat to red state america.

it seems to have died a quick death in the media, or am i just wholly oblivious? for a day or two, it made a mark. but since then, well................not much.

is it possible the "faith" base is less worried about gay married couples, and more worried about their sons, daughters, dads and moms getting killed/maimed in iraq?

i live in va, and we have a constitutional amendment on the ballot, to outlaw any legal recognition of other than a male/female union. it may well pass, but as far as galvanizing the base, it seems to be pretty much of a non-starter here.

Sadly, no, it's not possible.  No matter the atrocities of this GOP Regime, the litanies make for good copy but at the end of the day it's going to be just like 2004: hatred of gays trumps everything else, and now you can throw in the added bonus of Mexican-hating to boot.

Case in point: The much maligned, high profile Mark Foley would have easily carried the GOP base in his district if given the chance to run, and probably would have won the district outright as long as he continued his policy of saying nasty things about gays and Mexicans.

The GOP misadventure in Iraq doesn't really bother Uhmerrikahns because it's "only" volunteers and brown people doing the dying.

GOP retains control 2006.  Just watch.

    I hope you're right glanton.

I bet it will be a tie.  GOP Senate and Democratic House.

2 Years of partisan gridlock and then a great 2008 campaign.

    Should be fun.

    Here's to good blogging.
