Via the AP:

Nearly all air travelers entering the U.S. will be required to show passports beginning Jan. 23, including returning Americans and people from Canada and other nations in the Western Hemisphere.

The date was disclosed Tuesday by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in an interview with The Associated Press. The Homeland Security Department plans to announce the change on Wednesday.

This includes Americans traveling to Mexico, Bermuda and Canada, countries where birth certificates or drivers' licenses have always sufficed.

The cost of a passport? $97.00. For a family of four planning a trip, that's not cheap change. HSA says currently only 1 in 4 Americans have a passport.

What's next? Requiring infants to register for a social security card before the age of three? DNA testing at birth? This is just the kind of overkill that shows that the terrorists have won Bush's War on Terror by causing us to diminish our way of life and the degree of mutual trust we citizens have maintained with our government.

In ten years, will we even recognize our own country? I'll bet Osama will be sitting in his cave giggling it up with five or six of his number two henchman about how easily we fell into his scare scheme.

    There, fixed it for you.

The other way to look at this is that we should have been requiring passports since day one, and are very late in just doing it now.

    infant passports (none / 0) (#5)

An infant will be required to hold their own passport when travelling from the US to Canada after Jan 8., so the SS# before 3 years of age isn't such a stretch of the imagination.

Our child was born a week and a half ago, we should be able to get his birth certificate before we go to Canuckistan on the 20th...but if we had to get a passport...or if he was born a week or so late...thousands of dollars of tickets would be wasted.

Infant Social Security Number (none / 0) (#6)

I think that social security numbers are required at birth right now. If you want to claim the personal exemption for the child on your federal income tax you have to provide the child's social security number.

Have you heard about what the DHS wants to do?  They want to clear passenger manifestos an hour before takeoff.  If you are not specifically "cleared" you cannot leave or enter Amerika.  An absence of a no is not sufficient.  I have not heard much about this and it's a really awful proposal. Reading the Federal Register was scary.

Passports are a minimal precaution for closing a hole that exists now.  How easy do you want it to be for bad actors who wish to enter the US?

I have an idea - let's make a list of all possible thing to be afraid of, and make anybody who makes you nervous a felon.

...that tells them how much easier and better life will be. No more forgetting your bank card - just wave your hand over the scanner. Never have to worry about losing your wallet again - you'll be your wallet. Want to clear customs? Just walk through this electronic gate please, sir. Is my sentence over - can I leave this place now? One second - let's scan you.... Yep, you can go now.

According to the blog "PapersPlease" the US govt wants all farm animals registered.  Once people get used to animals being chipped (which is already happening with pets) it shouldn't be too large of a leap...

    I wasn't kidding. ;-)

I'm pretty good with computers. But there are millions who are much more skilled than I am. And lot's who would love the technical challenges.

Imagine... they could steal not only your pin number, and not only your identity, but your history and your reputation as well.

Or just invent a few "people" out of a few lines of code.

...to subjugate the masses and show 'em who the boss is.

These are all just fear/war-mongering baby steps toward that totalitarian society the rethugs so crave.

Remember the old NRA line, "If you ban guns, only criminals will have guns"?

Well, here you could write that, "If you passport, brand, inject IC chip identifiers, or otherwise restrict the lawful travel of citizens, the terrorists will be the only ones you cannot monitor."
