Ted Haggard Fired for "Sexually Immoral Conduct"

The church investigation has concluded. Pastor Ted Haggard has been fired for "sexually immoral conduct."

The board that made the decision, called the "Overseer Board of New Life Church," said in a prepared statement Saturday afternoon: "Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct."

A letter of explanation and apology by Haggard as well as a word of encouragement from his wife will be read during services at New Life Church Sunday morning, the statement said.

Here's the full text (pdf) of the announcement:

We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard. Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.

The language of our church bylaws state that as Overseers we must decide in cases where the Senior Pastor has "demonstrated immoral conduct" whether we must "remove the pastor from his position or to discipline him in any way they deem necessary."

In consultation with leading evangelicals and experts familiar with the type of behavior Pastor Haggard has demonstrated, we have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal and removal.

In addition, the Overseers will continue to explore the depth of Pastor Haggard's offense so that a plan of healing and restoration can begin.

Pastor Haggard and his wife have been informed of this decision. They have agreed as well that he should be dismissed and that a new pastor for New Life Church should be selected according to the rules of replacement in the bylaws.

That process will begin immediately in hopes that a new pastor can be confirmed by the end of the year 2006. In the interim, Ross Parsley will function as the leader of the church with full support of the Overseers.

A letter of explanation and apology by Pastor Haggard as well as a word of encouragement from Gayle Haggard will be read in the 9:00 and 11:00 service of New Life Church.

According to at least one wanna-be mega-church pastor out near Seattle, it's his wife's fault.  For letting herself go.  For not being sufficiently "available" to him.  Yadda, yadda.

Is there anything these fundies won't blame on women?

FWIW, the blogger exposing this latest abomination is the same guy who broke the story that "Heckuva Job Brownie" had made his living judging show horses, prior to Katrina....

In addition to complaining about wives letting themselves go, he says they don't make themselves available.  My question is how are they supposed to let go of all the frightening, sex is bad, abstinence only, ignorant conditioning they receive all their lives to become sexy, always available wives once they're married?

And re Rev Ted, here I thought women who let themselves go were replaced by younger women.

Anything you want to do about it?

As for Pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle's Mars Hills:

"A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband's sin, but she may not be helping him either."

From what I've seen, Mrs. Haggard is in 'pretty good shape.' But what to expect from just another theocratic idiot.

let's not forget, she married the guy, willingly. sorry, you reap what you sow. unless you can prove she married under duress, she got exactly what she wanted, no more or less.

i have no sympathy for her, and all others of her ilk.

I disagree. I think some compassion for her and her children is called for because this isn't something they created or are directly responsible for creating.

I have absolutely none for Haggard. He's the one who's been living the lie as well as lying to his family.

The belief in hell requires the acceptance of the Christian paradigm.  If you do not hold to that notion then the concept as well as its normative uses and application should not be viewed as a negative nor positive statement.
