A Conscience in Connecticut?

In my view, Chris Shays (R-CT) deserved defeat in his House race. He survived. But I tip my hat to him for this from his victory speech Tuesday night:

"I don't know how you'll react to this, but I want to also say this," he said, after quieting his supporters who'd been joyously chanting, "Two more years!" He then unfolded a piece of paper and read off a list of names. "I sent them to Iraq and they came home draped in American flags," Shays continued, as the once-raucous ballroom became eerily quiet. "I think about them almost every day of my life, and, when the press talked about how tormented I must feel about losing the election, they just didn't get it. ... The only torment I feel is for those families, and I pray that we can make it right for these families and that we will find a way to have our men and women come home from success, not failure, but that we find a way to bring them home." It was a numbing sentiment indeed.

Respect to you for that Representative Shays. Joe Lieberman would NEVER show that quality.

The following, from the Hartford Courant, via Taegan Goddard:

"There is a little playfulness in me that wants me to make a joke about that, but it's too serious. The answer is no."

-- Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), quoted by the Hartford Courant, when asked if he would consider joining the Republican caucus in the Senate. Lieberman didn't take a congratulatory phone call from Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on election night.

The first thing the Dems have to remind themselves of, when dealing with Repugs and all-but-Repugs, is that they specialize in punking people.  For fun, for profit, for position, for the hell of it.  Bushie and his, including Rape Gurney Joe, will punk you every time.

Do you want to be like McCain, coming back for more?  Or do you have a little pride?

He's looking for the easy way out. He wants forgiveness and redemption, but he wants if free with no strings attached.

He doesn't want to earn it. He's full of sh*t and I can't say the rest of what I want to say here or you'll have to delete this comment.

Jeezus..... how stupid does he think people are?

Sponsor repeal of the Torture Act.  He voted for it.  He needs to be in on repealing it. If he succeeds, he might go some of the way towards cleaning the blot on his name.

I'm with scribe. I have a hard time feeling like these guys are doing anything but more of their attempts at BS and manipulative suckering until I see them start to make substantive changes. Their talk is cheap and has always been cheap. Now they want people to "feel" for them?

Get rid of the Military Commissions Act. Show some spine and honesty instead of evading accountability. Then come back and try the weepy confession.

is oppose The Unit when - not if, but when - the Congress reconvenes for the lame duck session and Bushie and Abu Gonzo start pushing their big priority - Warrantless Wiretapping.

    You thought that was dead?

    Think again.

Snow-job Tony at his presser today said The Unit does not, repeat not, take the election results as a rebuke.  "They are just an election result."

    Block Warrantless wiretapping.
Block Bolton's nomination (that's coming back, too.)
Block Gates nomination (at least until the new Congress;  he's trying to push it through now.).

I agree.  I think he'll do it and he won't be the only one.

moderate Republicans will feel safe joining up with "conservative" Democrats (Tweety keeps saying they are conservative, somebody keeps pushing this, I guess, to set a mood for some Republicans to slip into something a little more comfortable.
