Not The Sharpest Pencil In The Box

Linc Chafee is a good man. But it never was clear to me why he did not become an Independent and caucus with the Dems. He would be Senator right now if he did. And it really would reflect who he is. Because of that, I have to sympathize somewhat with some of my friends at Red State:

Since the Republican party spent over a million dollars helping him defeat a real Republican, and pulled out the GOTV machine to mobilize Democrats on his behalf, Lincoln Chafee has decided to display his trademark dazzling intellect by declaring that the appropriate thing for him to do now is leave the Republican party. . . . When asked if his comments meant he thought he might not belong in the Republican Party, he replied: "That's fair." The self-serving idiot continues peeing on the party which (inexplicably) bent over backwards to save his job ...

All of it is inexplicable.

Chafee said he stuck with the party in large part because it allowed him to bring federal dollars home to Rhode Island. He said he did not regret not switching parties before the election because he felt it kept him in the best position to help Rhode Island to remain with what was then the majority party.

And now they're still with the majority.  Seems like really good constituent service.

If you say so. I don't follow that reasoning.

It sounds to me like he really didn't care if he lost.

Most likely Chafee is just loathe to say the main reason he didn't switch, fear of losing his social connections. Jeffords faced this fear and conquered it, while Chafee did not. But now Chafee has the satisfaction that the winning side is the better, and he knows that, plus he wasted GOP cash, which also is a good result.

I for one welcome Lincoln Chafee to the Democrat party if, in fact, he decides to make the switch.  The Republican party today is the party of George Bush and Tom Delay and religious fundamentalists.  Moderate Republicans like Chafee have more in common with the Democrats than conservative Republicans.

It must be hard to leave a political party that you once loved but in the words of Neil Sedaka "breaking up is hard to do".
