Blizzard Two Arriving: Open Thread

Here we go again. The snow is expected to begin falling around noon. I'm off to get as much done as I can before the snow gets too heavy to drive in and the roads ice up. Just little things, like going to the office to get the mail, the grocery store to stock up on food and pick up some fresh flowers to brighten a gray day.

Here's an open thread for you.

The Question They Should Have Asked (5.00 / 1) (#1)

Just wanted to say....you get snow...we get rain here in Houston......either way, I am sick of it already!  Here's a good article about Iraq...does it really have to be this hard?

    http://scoop.epluribusmedia.org/story/2006/12/28/121931/07

    excerpt:

"Many of those who supported the invasion of Iraq, such as Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institute who made the statement today on Public Radio's Radio Times, say it was a `close call.'  Given the information they were provided, the argument goes, it appeared that something did have to be done about Saddam Hussein.  After all, he had committed "genocide" and had used chemical weapons against his own people--and had certainly once embarked on a nuclear program.

Such people further excuse themselves, as O'Hanlon does, by saying that the invasion wasn't "wrong" anyway--it was the aftermath.  If, they say, we had gone in strong rather than on the cheap, we wouldn't be in the situation we face today.

All of these people have weaseled out of responsibility--not that many of them had any in the first place--by deflecting attention from the clear and simple fact that it was no `close call' in determining to support or oppose the invasion.  It was only a close call (if then) if one did not ask one significant question:"

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Seven New Orleans police officers were indicted on Thursday on murder and attempted murder charges for a shooting on a New Orleans bridge that came to symbolize the lawless chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina last year.

    So much for shooting "looters".

...it's enough to make you cry:
America marks three and a half years of winning in Iraq, and nearly 3,000 victory deaths:
"We're paying dearly in the form of American lives," Bush said, "but, plainly speaking, that's just victory for you."

Bush Grants Self Permission To Grant More Power To Self
Senior administration officials lauded Bush's decision, saying that current presidential powers over presidential power were "far too limited."

"Previously, the president only had the power to petition Congress to allow him to grant himself the power to grant more power to himself," Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez said shortly after the ceremony. "Now, the president can grant himself the  power to interpret new laws however he sees fit, then use that power to interpret a law in such a manner that in turn grants him increased power."

This gave me a chuckle.  Per crooks and liars  Homeland Security Department Adviser Fran Townsend was asked whether the fact that we never got Osama Bin Laden can be considered a failure.

TOWNSEND: Well, I'm not sure -- it's a success that hasn't occurred yet. I don't know that I view that as a failure.

There you go.  Through Bush's truthiness prism there are never any failures, just successes that haven't occurred yet.
