Hillary Now Opposes Drivers' Licenses for the Undocumented

I'm disappointed to see that Hillary Clinton has now come out against drivers licenses for the undocumented.

Her advisers think this will take the issue "off the table." I think it opens her up to new attacks in tomorrow night's debate for being inconsistent.

She said at the last debate she wasn't particularly familiar with the proposals. I assume she is now. That's what makes her statement so disappointing. I thought that with more information on the issue, she would have seen the wisdom of the plan.

    She means they finished polling.

    Not a leader.

she was genuine when she said she wasn't familiar with the details of the Spitzer plan. The problem is, when it was explained to her, she was for it, and now that public opinion has swelled against it and it's been rescinded, she's changed her position.

Did polling affect her new position? Probably, but all the candidates use polling.

I think we just express ourselves differently. Which is good, otherwise it would make for a very boring blog.

I'm still waiting for BTD to come along and call her a "xenophobe" for it.

Coincidence that a Quinnipiac poll released yesterday shows Ohio voters oppose 84 - 11 percent issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants?

Chris Dodd brought back the flip-flopper charge:

Later in the day, Dodd spokeswoman Colleen Flanagan offered a further critique of Clinton's position on the licenses. "It's flip-flopping cubed. She was for it before she was against it, before she was for it, before she was against it. It's been weeks now, and she still hasn't offered up a serious, principled answer to the question," she said.

Isn't wise and was only ever considered not because anyone thought it was wise and wanted to do it, but because Bush and Congress failed to do something about immigration.

We don't have an immigration problem. (none / 0) (#9)

We have an illegal alien problem.

    Congress did something about that.

They passed a law to build a wall and close the border.

That's all they need to do.

Now we need to see a few defeated over their failure to do what the law said they would do.

So does anyone expect her to stand against 75% of the electorate on the issue?  Fat chance.  Triangulation does not work that way.

Why not have classes of licenses (none / 0) (#8)

reflecting one's status? Had Spitzer REALLY wanted to "solve" the problems to which he alludes then he would have proposed requiring drivers to obtain licenses which informed as to one's residency status. "Permanent" legal residents (whether or not U.S. citizens)  of NY could have one color, persons with visas could have another issued for the length of the visa and illegal immigrants would have a third color.

The state would not refuse to issue licenses to illegal immigrants or illegal "visitors" and would in fact require them to obtain the appropriate licenses to have the privilege of driving legally. The state would neither  be enforcing federal immigration laws nor ignoring them  and the purported rationales of ensuring drivers are properly tested for driving ability, their existence recorded to aid in enforcement of insurance and other state traffic regulations and the individuals having a form of ID  would be accomplished without creating the risk that the licenses would be exploitable to obtain things people not legally in this country are forbidden to obtain.

That some want illegal immigrants and visitors to have government issued documents which serve to conceal their status is the point. If that is someone's position then he or she should at least be honest enough to admit it and defend THAT position.

and illegal immigrants would have a third color.

How about a color for those who have

Sold liquor without collecting the Federal Tax?

    Same with tobacco.

    And other federal cimes..

The state would neither  be enforcing federal

    On the state side:

    Didn't pay their child support?

    Don't have insurance?

    Smoked in the non-smoking section....

Hillary had left herself more "outs" than a rabbit warren in a block of swiss cheese. Now that Spitzer's plan is toast, she could finally take a stand.  Oh, and btw, isn't her stand what Edwards said, only without the "part of the pathway to citizenship" part?  Which makes Edwards now ahead of Hillary on the driver's license issue.
